Public Administration and Social Service Professions, Other:
I received a BS in Safety (with emphasis Aviation) from the University of Southern California. This program was enlisted under Public Administration, specifically under the Institute of Safety System Management. Currently, the program was reverted back to the Engineering Department. However, when I attended USC, I was initially enrolled under the Aerospace Engineering Program. After the first year, I realized that although I had a passion for aviation and sciences, I was more interested in the study, development and implementation of policy surrounding the management of safety and risk in aviation. The BS Safety program afforded me the opportunity to do so by learning general studies from occupational safety health, system safety management methodologies to human factors and accident investigation. I am currently utilizing my major at the Federal Aviation Administration. The pros of this degree/major (Safety) are that it is highly specialized and underrepresented in a market that is increasingly finding value in safety and risk management. In addition, having a Safety degree allows you to successfully walk into future demanding careers in the area of environmental, health, & safety. It is also a very satisfying career path because its fundamental charter is to improve vast industries by means of implementing standards, policy and regulations to protect the public. The cons of this major is that it has to be carefully mapped out to an area you have passion in so that you can ensure optimal growth or otherwise it can be seen as too specialized in some markets. |

Public Administration:
Public administration is a challenging and fun degree to obtain. If you are interested in how City, State or Federal organizations function, this is a very good degree choice. You will learn about business law, the fundamentals of how state agencies function and the best way to manage such agencies. If you don't like dealing with the public, this is defnitely not a degree to persue. Depending on what type of agency you are employed by, you will often deal with many social issues such as child abuse, divorce, foster care, homelessness, the court system and many other often tough areas to handle. It takes a strong will and patience to deal with the social problems you may be faced with on a daily basis. If you are able to handle these issues, the rewards are great and you end up feeling wonderful about what you do. |
