Kinesiology and Exercise Science:

I chose this major both because I love sports and exercise and because I expected it to be a growth industry, it seems that was correct as there are plenty of employment oppertunites in the field. I would still choose this major.

Health and Physical Education, General:

Although this major may seem to be one for dumb jocks, consider the salaries of the successful coaches in the pros and college. To be successful you have to be a motivator and at times a shrink and baby sitter. You will have to deal with bothersome parents, administrators and alumni. However, you will be able to shape and mold youths into productive citizens.

If you choose this major it may take quite a long time to make any substantial money. You normally have to work your way up from the bottom. You have to obtain experience and pay your dues before you will ever have an opportunity to have a large income. When you graduate with this major you will enter a competitive field. Successful athletic programs are important in this country. Only the better motivators will be successful. There will be outside interference from parents and administrators and influence by alumni. Everyone will want to know why their children aren't starting or playing. There are budget problems you will have to overcome and find ways to get equipment with little or no money. Continued training will be required to stay on top of your game, no pun intended. There are liability issues to consider if a player under your control gets hurt or intentionally hurts someone else. You will have to deal with off-field antics of your players.

If I had it to do over again, I would have selected a more specific focus for my major. My degree gave me an overview of the health, fitness, and recreation field. It would be a good major for anyone wanting to work at a rec center or for city parks and recreation. For anything that is more specific, you would definitely need more specialized training than what I received.

My major was Ahtletic Training. It was part of the Physical Edication department. If you are considering athletic training as a major, you will need to have knowledge of what an athletic trainer does, and the hours they work. You will also have to enjoy sports. I would definately reccomend studying athletic training if you have a love for sports, and want a career in an Allied Health Profession, where you can help people and be a major influence/role mdel for them. If I had to do it all over again, I would do so in a heartbeat. I love what I do and have a passion for it.

Athletic trainers work in many settings from high schools and middle school to college and professional sports, to clinical and industrial settings. We are the ones who go out on the field when someone gets hurt in a game. We are responsible for the evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation of athletic/orthopedic injuries. We also help prevent injuries through proper rehabilitaion, and prophylactic taping and bracing.

One of the pros is a close relationship with athletes or patients in their recovery process after injuries. You get a sense of fulfillment from watching someone achieve their goals after an injury. The cons could be the hours. Many athletic trainers work afternoons and nights dues to practice and game schedules. Travel is required with many positions. Athletic training is a fantastic field if you enjoy working with athletes and helping them to return to play after injury. A degree from a CAAHEP accredited university is required in order to sit for the national exam. Pay is miniscule as compared to other health care fields. Athletic training is a very hands on major with a lot of labs and physical sciences. Some schools have cadaver labs for anatomy and physiology. Different schools have different requirements concerning practical hours, but you should be prepared to complete a minimum of 800 hours. I would major in Athletic training again; pay is the only negative.

Health and Physical Education, General:

Public Health Education is a good major for those who want to pursue a career in the health field of becoming a wellness coordinator, educator, and insurance. I have found that unless you live in a big city there is not much demand for this major. There are only a handful of jobs that you are qualified for and they are mostly taken. I would recommend if you live in a big city.
