English Language and Literature, General:
This major taught critical thinking and writing skills that can be used in many jobs. A lot of people major in English because it gives them the skills they need to go on to law school or another graduate program. I would recommend English if you have specific plans for your future. For example, if you want to be a teacher or a writer, or if you plan to apply to graduate school. Pairing an English major with a minor also could expand your career possibilities. For example, I minored in editing, and was able to find a job writing and editing content for business' websites. If I could go back, I would still choose English; it has given me communication and writing skills that are valuable in a variety of professions. Some people struggle to find jobs when the major in English, or fall back on it because they are unsure in their choice of major. As I said before, an English major is beneficial if you make specific plans beforehand and emphasize the needed skills in the classes you take. |

English Language and Literature, General:
Majoring in English literature exposes you to a wide variety of writing styles. As you read literature from other time periods and cultures, you gain a deeper understanding of the world. It enables you to think about and discuss many topics that are relevant today and improves your ability to communicate. I would recommend and English major to those who love to read and who want to become good writers and thinkers. With an English major, you can enter many different careers, but people often expect those who majored in English to teach or write. If I could choose again, I think I still would become an English major, but I would be sure to do an internship that gave me some practical working skills as well. Overall, getting an English major helps broaden your mind, but it does not give you a specific career path. For those needing more direction, I would say they might consider a more practical, career-focused degree. |

I LOVE my major! I can't imagine getting a degree in anything else! I graduate in Spring 2010 and I'm really, really sad to leave because it has been amazing. I have met so many intelligent people and I have learned SO much in my major. I'm presenting a paper on Flannery O'Connor in a few weeks and I'm about to intern at a school to help teach poetry to lower-income kids. Exciting!! |

English Literature (British and Commonwealth):
I would advise potential English majors to minor in a vocational field, because depending upon where you live, there is very little demand for an English degree. Although the ability to write well should be an important consideration when hiring an employee, it is often an overlooked skill. |

English Composition:
This is a good major to study if you want to teach English, be an editor, become a paralegal, be a technical or other writer, or work in other capacities with writing. I recommend it if you are good at it and enjoy it. I might still choose it all over again, but I would also have a backup plan, like health careers. The pros of being an English major is that communications come easily to you, and you can get teaching jobs. The cons are that if you teach in public schools, you are at the mercy of the administrators and broken economies of the states. |

English Language and Literature, General:
When I entered college, I had no idea what I wanted to. I hada passion for reading and writing, and gravitated towards those classes. I found an English degree to be extremely satisying as it honed by analytical and writing skills. It taught me not to look for right answers, but the importance of finding my own interpretation of things. I backed up my English major with a minor in Art History and Spanish.
I have always had a strong desire to help people and I found that my English degree was actually very versatile as a springboard to careers which would allow me to do that. I have had many jobs where my degree has been extremely useful: English teacher, public relations and most recently, grant writer. I've found that perhaps my degree didn't give me the "hands on" experience I was looking for (that maybe a Business degree would have given me), but it taught me how to adapt to new experiences so I can gather the most information possible. |

English Language and Literature, General:
If you love literature, language, and critical analysis - i.e., if it's difficult for you to imagine *not* being an English major - then I recommend this major. Reading and analyzing literature is a wonderful way to understand our world, its ideas, and its history. It's also a great way to learn how to write and think critically.
An English degree is not as completely hopeless as a career starter as you might fear - okay, it's not business, but publishing, journalism, marketing, and public relations are all aided by the communication and analytical skills that an English degree at a decent university will give you. It's also a good stepping stone to professional degrees like law, library science, and education. And if you really get entrenched, you can get a Ph.D. in English literature or an MFA in creative writing and become a professor.
Okay, an English degree will probably not enrich your pocketbook, but it will definitely enrich your life, while giving you the bachelor's degree that employers look for. |

English Language and Literature, General:
Though liking to read is something that will undoubtedly assist you if you decide to become an English major, consider at the same time that a lot of programs will require you to write extensively. If you don't like to write, consider a different major. |

English Language and Literature / Letters, Other:
My first tip is to make sure that you love it. Yes, it is an easy major, but it is also a pretty worthless degree unless you either get another major in, say, business or you get deep intrinsic value out of the knowledge you gain. For anyone who loves reading, loves learning about literature, and enjoys sharpening critical thinking skills, I would definitely encourage pursuing this major. I would definitely do it all over again, but I never wanted to do the typical 'career' route. The pros are you have a lot of fun learning, you become very astute and cultured, and you gain some impressive critical thinking skills. The cons are that jobs are difficult unless you want to go back to school to get, say, a law degree. Also, another con for many people is that there is a lot of work outside the classroom with reading and writing. |

English Language and Literature, General:
Unless you plan on going into academia, you could do better to choose a major more versatile and applicable to the business world. English Lit is fun, the classes are interesting and the material is great, but the job prospects are dismal. |

English Language and Literature, General:
At the time, I thought an English major would be easy. I loved to read, and I was interested in many different things, so this sounded great to me. Also, I really had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and English/Literature seemed like something that would give me a wide range of knowledge to be used in the future. Well, I was right! Since I had chosen a specific career path, such as medicine or law, I had the opportunity to work at several different positions, including teaching Adult Basic Education at the Chillicothe Correctional Institute. I worked for Ohio Bell as a Service Rep, I worked for K-Mart as a Department Manager, and I retired as a Commercial Underwriter at Nationwide Insurance. I really think the study of English & Literature helped me in all of these positions. It gave me better understanding of human nature, it helped me to understand regional dialects, it taught me respect and knowledge for other cultures and lifestyles, and to understand the written and spoken word. My major taught me so many things, it is difficult to list them all. It's a great major and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Life and the people who live it. |

Creative Writing:
If you are considering this major, realize that it either needs to be something you are passionate about and want to do for you and not for career reasons, or something that you want to teach and get a doctorate degree in. I got my degree for myself and to improve my writing for publication purposes. The only other reason to get this degree is to become a college professor, as there really are no other jobs out there, especially if all you get is a bachelors degree. |

Take some business courses, too. That way if you end up working in the financial sector editing or rewriting publications you might have a clue as to what their business is all about. |

English Language and Literature, General:
I think this is a wonderful major for anyone that has likes reading or writing and isn't sure of what they want to do after graduating. The possibilities with an English major are phenomenal! You can choose teaching, writing for newspapers, magazines, government offices, etc. or even law school! I would definitely choose this major again as I can alter it to fit any other careers I might want to pursue down the line. Even though I love reading, however, I will say that sometimes it is hard to juggle reading three novels for classes as well as doing writing assignments. |

I would strongly recommend this major for people who like to read, analyze, and write. It provides a broad-based framework for many other careers, most notably teaching and practicing law. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't change a thing. I can think of no drawbacks to majoring in literature. I believe it provides a well-rounded education. |

English Composition:
This is a great major for those who want some freedom in writing. You can not only write, but it will help you in communications in the future. You can choose to teach as well. There is a lot of writing in this major so if you are not good with long essays, reviews, etc., this is probably not the major for you. |

English Language and Literature, General:
One of the reasons I selected English as a major is that I chose to attend a Liberal Arts college, and wished to build on my education after college to enter the business world. A liberal arts degree readies a person for "learning how to learn." After undergraduate work, this positions a person for either entry-level training in the business world, or post-graduate work in any particular field. The bonus of choosing English over, for instance, Political Science, History, Economics, etc., is that it provides a strong foundation in writing, with numerous iterations of book reviews, creative writing, term papers, etc., for four years. This fine-tunes the writing and grammar skills that will serve you for the rest of your life more than is possible through a writing skills course taught to business or other majors. And, of course, you get the added benefit of reading some truly excellent literature. I truly recommend the English major as a pathway to excellent writing and four years of entertaining reading.
