English Language and Literature, General:
This major taught critical thinking and writing skills that can be used in many jobs. A lot of people major in English because it gives them the skills they need to go on to law school or another graduate program. I would recommend English if you have specific plans for your future. For example, if you want to be a teacher or a writer, or if you plan to apply to graduate school. Pairing an English major with a minor also could expand your career possibilities. For example, I minored in editing, and was able to find a job writing and editing content for business' websites. If I could go back, I would still choose English; it has given me communication and writing skills that are valuable in a variety of professions. Some people struggle to find jobs when the major in English, or fall back on it because they are unsure in their choice of major. As I said before, an English major is beneficial if you make specific plans beforehand and emphasize the needed skills in the classes you take. |

English Language and Literature, General:
Majoring in English literature exposes you to a wide variety of writing styles. As you read literature from other time periods and cultures, you gain a deeper understanding of the world. It enables you to think about and discuss many topics that are relevant today and improves your ability to communicate. I would recommend and English major to those who love to read and who want to become good writers and thinkers. With an English major, you can enter many different careers, but people often expect those who majored in English to teach or write. If I could choose again, I think I still would become an English major, but I would be sure to do an internship that gave me some practical working skills as well. Overall, getting an English major helps broaden your mind, but it does not give you a specific career path. For those needing more direction, I would say they might consider a more practical, career-focused degree. |

English Language and Literature, General:
I LOVE my major! I can't imagine getting a degree in anything else! I graduate in Spring 2010 and I'm really, really sad to leave because it has been amazing. I have met so many intelligent people and I have learned SO much in my major. I'm presenting a paper on Flannery O'Connor in a few weeks and I'm about to intern at a school to help teach poetry to lower-income kids. Exciting!! |
