Early Childhood Education and Teaching:
I knew most of my life that I wanted to be a teacher so when I chose education as my major I knew that is exactly where I wanted to be. I enjoyed my years in school as an educatin major because I learned so much about how to be a good teacher, how to have great classroom management, how to write great lesson plans, and even how to help the struggling student. I think that if someone wants to be able to help make the difference in a child's life then becoming an education major is the best step for them. You will learn many skills in your schooling that will help you become the best teacher that you can possibly be and you will help change the lives of so many wonderful children. |

English / Language Arts Teacher Education:
Majoring in English education is great, if you love literature. You have to take a lot of writing and reading classes, so be prepared. Also, be prepared that you may not get to teach the type of class you want. I would like to teach British Literature, but I may also have to teach American Literature, or wait until there is an opening. I would definitely recommend studying this.. I don't know if I would do it again if I was re-choosing a major. I might go into Nursing instead. The positives are that teaching is a secure and needed job, so it is great in this economy. You get to help children/teens which is very rewarding. However, a teacher's salary is very limited. |

Elementary Education and Teaching:
At the university where I studied elementary education, it was a very good experience the first two years. After that, the program itself, started to go downhill. Professors were being brought in who had never set foot in an elementary classroom, professors that barely understood English, and professors that rarely made it to class seemed to be the case more often than not for my last two years of college. If I had to do everything all over again, and stayed at that particular university, I would not pick that major based on my last two years. My advice to people considering elementary education would be to research their school choice first and make sure they have not only a strong education department, but also to see if there is a program that helps the students find jobs after they graduate. Another point I would consider is to check out the school districts in the community you would like to work in after graduating. Many of the school districts that were close to me after I graduated gave preference to alumni. Since I was not from that area, it was extremely difficult for me to get an interview. As it was, I ended up in a completely different career. The pros of my degree are that it does help me obtain a higher consideration when applying for another job; I felt better prepared when i had my own children because I had dealt with small children for so long; and I have a great children's book collection for my sons someday to enjoy. The cons are that since I am unable to go back to school at this time, my teaching certification expired and I am unable to renew it, so all I have is my degree, which will not be enough if I ever decide to try and get back into the education field. |

Elementary Education and Teaching:
I would obviously recommend this major for anyone who wants to become an elementary school teacher, as it is almost completely necessary to become a teacher. I would like to tell anyone thinking about getting a degree in elementary education to make sure that that is what they want to do. To be a good teacher and to enjoy your college education, you must be passionate about children and teaching. I thoroughly enjoyed my classes, especially towards the end of my college education, when we spent more time in schools and working with children. If I had to choose a college education over again, I would still choose elementary education as my major. |

Early Childhood Education and Teaching:
This is a great field to get into. This job will be around for a long time, and is in demand. I would choose this major again. I have made lots of lasting friendships. I get to help children and have an impact on their future. To obtain a job in this field you will need to obtain a degree. There are many Universities that have great programs. |

Elementary Education and Teaching:
Elementary education is a very rewarding career to help shape the minds of our future. This is a career that you definitely feel you are being called to teach. Being an elementary teacher requires you to deal with and handle many different problems and situations. Flexibility is a must and you should be willing to work well with co-workers. There is no better profession if you have a love and passion for kids. I would highly recommend elementary education for someone that has a desire to work with children. The pros and cons of this particular major is that you would have the opportunity to work in a classroom environment during your years in college to make sure this would be the field of work you would be interested in pursueing. One major con is the fact that you will do your student teaching and not be compensated for this work you are doing. Overall I highly recommend this profession. |

Elementary Education and Teaching:
My advise to those considering an Elementary Education major is to think long and hard that that is what you want to do with your life. Keep your mind open to other options like special education, secondary education, park or museum education, or working with people in other capacities. Also, just depending where you are looking for a job there may be an over abudance of education majors that do not have jobs when your finish school. Elementary Education is a very common major, and I recomend it highly if you know you want to teach general education elementary school. I highly recomend getting experience in other aspects of education like special education before you make your final decision. If I had to do it all over again I would have gone into special education, because I could not get a teaching job right out of school became a teachers assistant with severe disablity students and now love the job and working with special education students. The pros of this major it is a common major so it is easy to get into classes and most schools offer it. It is also rewarding, and our society will always need teachers. The cons of it are there is not a lot you can do with the major besides teach, and right now there are an overabundace of elementary education teachers so in some areas it is difficult to find a teaching job. The pay is also not always very good for teachers. If you are thinking about an elementary education major I recomend it, but also keep your options open. |

Elementary Education and Teaching:
Education is the major for you if you want to help shape the minds and lives of our future generations. If you love kids, that's great, but it's not enough of a reason to go into education. To be an educator you should be a lifelong learner. You shouldn't go into Education if you're reasons are a) getting summers off, b) working fewer hours (that's a myth there is A LOT of planning, grading, committees, etc that takes place after school hours), c) For a regular, dependable job and an equally dependable paycheck. Teaching is not about money or time off. Teaching is about learning, growing and helping our youth do the same.
If I had my choice, I do not know if I would still go into Education. I started my college career as a Graphic Design major and sometimes wonder what it would've been like to complete that degree instead.
PROS: An education degree will NEVER be obsolete, there will always be a job field.
Education is a great choice if you love working with young people
CONS: The job field is not as broad as it would be for other majors (ie business).
Education theories and views shift every few years which means what you learn in college could be of little service to you depending on the government's education plan, administration's policies, and changing views on how things should be taught. |

Education, General:
Our country needs great teachers-- People with a passion for lifelong learning and shaping the lives of our youth. No one should go into Education because "they get summers off" or for money or because they know it's a job field that will always need people. Loving children, unfortunately, isn't enough of a reason to go into Education either.
I would recommend studying Education to those who truly want to teach because we need teachers who WANT to be in the classroom. If I had to do it over again I might or might not have chosen this major. I started my college career as a Graphic Design major and sometimes wonder what I'd be doing right now if I'd stuck with it.
PROS of an Education degree: It is a field where you are truly helping people and connecting with future generations.
It is not a "fad"...this degree will never become obsolete, there is always going to be a need for teachers.
CONS of an Education degree: It limits your job choices slightly. For instance, with a business degree, you can get a job in many fields. Not quite as varied options exist in education. |

Mathematics Teacher Education:
I am 56 years old and May 3, 2008 I graduated, with honors, with a B.A. degree in Middle Grades Math Educaiton. How specific is that !! How about picking a critical subject !! I love it. My classes were so specific I feel very prepared to do this job. No fluff - nothing I didn't need. Very intense, very specific degree. My classes were geared towards two things - the challenge of teaching in the middle school and the challenge of effectively teaching math. Go for it !!!!!!!!!!!!1 |

Business Teacher Education:
This is an excellent major in that it prepares you for not only teaching, but for the professional world if you decide not to teach. The subjects are practical subjects that are useful in everyday life as well. It gives you many different avenues to follow for jobs. |

Music Teacher Education:
I think the degree is too broad. You get a smattering of things and if you don't have prior experience in an area it isn't enough to be proficient in that area. You take a ton of classes for a degree in something that isn't even a full time job in most schools. I love what I do, but I don't think I was well prepared for all aspects of the career to the broad range that is expected of the degree. |

Education / Teaching of Individuals with Speech or Language Impairments:
Being a Speech Therapist is a highly rewarding career. For the past 39 years I have worked in the Public School System. There is nothing to compare with the face of a child who is finally able to communicate with others! The relief and joy of that child's parents is equally humbling. There are so many areas to choose from since you can work in schools or clinic settings or develop your own private practice if that suits your needs. You must have a Master's Degree to work as a Speech Language Pathologist, although there are also Speech Therapy Assistants, now which do not require as much college. The paperwork and red tape is the most frustrating part, but knowing you've made a difference in the life of another person is as the commercial says, "Priceless!" |

Early Childhood Education and Teaching:
I love working with children & I would recommend this career to people that love working with children as well. I only wish that teaching paid better, but I guess the true reward of this profession does not come in a dollar amount!

Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language / ESL Language Instructor:
I would advise anyone interested in TESL to try it out first, either at home or overseas. Volunteer in a school or college. Just because you speak English does not mean you can teach it! If you do enjoy this teaching, take classes in it and keep volunteering. Study not only grammar and teaching methods but also anthropology and American Studies. If I had to do it all over again I would get a Bachelor's degree then, maybe, eventually, an MA in Teaching. The other teachers I work with are often retired school teachers who do not understand the unique requirements of teaching ESL to immigrants. The best things about this job are the students (eager, grateful, fun) and the people I work with (supportive and dedicated). The con is the pay -- you can't really make a living teaching ESL unless you are in a school district. I teach adults four nights a week in a grant-driven program and must work other part-time jobs to make ends meet. But I LOVE going to work, writing my own curriculum and generating my own teaching materials, and working with great students. |

Elementary Education and Teaching:
I love this major very much, it is a perfect for me. I use to be a business major and I did not like it all. There is nothing wrong with being a business major, it was just not for me. This major is good if you like being around people of all ages and must like children. The pros of this major are that you can be a kid again by doing activities. You get all your weekends, holidays, and summers off. Most schools have excellent benefits and pension plans. The cons are that your job can be very political on the state level and government level. Your work comes home with you everyday and can be stressful depending on your students. If I could do this major all over again I would in a heart beat. This job is not for everybody, but I would recommend this major to most people if they enjoy working with children. |

Early Childhood Education and Teaching:
I enjoyed my time as an Early Childhood Education major very much. However, be prepared to deal with many individuals who believe that you are in an "easy" major or are preparing for life as a housewife. If this is the reason you are majoring in ECE, you are sorely mistaken. Early Childhood Ed. is a very time consuming major in terms of practicums, lesson plans, student teaching, etc. However, it is a very rewarding major. The first time you teach a class and see a child's eyes light up because he/she understands for the first time, you realize why you chose this major in the first place. You have to sacrifice a lot, but it is definitely worth it. If you want to be an early childhood teacher, no other major will prepare you better. |

Music Teacher Education:
I was afraid to study music because I wasn't a professional or even very good at any one instrument. However, I chose the oboe during my sophomore year. I practiced religiously and it paid off. Don't let music competitions scare you - jump in and try your best. I now use my experience to help students in the elementary setting. I loved my choice of music education because of the challenge and the joy I received from others studying this as well. |

Early Childhood Education and Teaching:
This is a great major if you enjoy working with younger children. It gives you the opportunity the work with new borns or to be an elementary teacher up the the third grade. It may be difficult to get a teaching position in your first year but you have options to work in preschools, child cares, become a home visitor or a subsitute teacher at any grade level. I would also recommend to take a few extra classes and receive a reading endorsement or any other that peaks your interest. I would definatly do it over again, I love my job. |
