Film / Cinema Studies:
First, I would not trade what I do for anything... well maybe 10 million dollars. I am a makeup artist in the Film Industry. I went to USC school of cinema before it was the School of Cinematic Arts! If you want to get into the film industry to do photography or direct, yes I would suggest going to school and getting a major for that. It is important to understand the technical aspects of those parts of film making. I went for production management where I was to learn how to produce and manage films. Unfortunately or fortunately for me, I found that people were paying me to take over an unknown, left out part of film making "make-up" so I took over that area. I monopolized it and actually used those management skills to take over. It was wonderful. Now USC did teach me some of those skills but you can learn them at colleges that are far less expensive! The only reason I went to USC was for the networking opportunities and the ablility to put it on my resume. Yes it has helped me in the tough times, but all in all, I do it all on my own. I would definately do it again, as I never felt as good as I did about my self, and my mind as when I was at USC. I would definately do this major again. But I would suggest to others trying to get into film... dont let a huge school take all your money just because they have a name. Film is all the same no matter where you learn it. And sometimes, its better to just JUMP IN rather than go to school. Grips, ADs, Makeup, Wardrobe, those are all areas that if you jump in and read books and learn on your own you can do. Of course a few classes at a trade school or community college will always help. |

Film / Video and Photographic Arts, Other:
When thinking of majoring in film, remember that it is a mixture of art and technical knowledge of film equipment. Film is more than just directing and writing. It also encompasses editing, sound, production assistance, lighting, cinematography. It is important to find a balance between these two worlds. If you do, you will be more capable of finding a job in the film industry. I think you must be willing to potentially live on low wages for several years before you find a job that you really want. It is a very competitive field, and film schools are popping up all over the place now. Be willing to compete for jobs, and be thick-skinned and ready to find another job if you don't get your first choice. I would still choose this major again if I went back to undergraduate school as it is a beautiful form of art and if you're good at it, enjoy it, and pursue it with a realistic mindset on the real world, you will find success. |

Film / Cinema Studies:
I graduaed with a BA in Film and Video production Georgia State University. My original intentions on pursuing this degree was to do something I loved and enjoyed at the same time. It is a very time consuming degree because you spend alot of your personal time reviewing films and tons of time in the editing room, cutting films. Anybody who has a passion for movie making should pursue this degree. I looked forward to every single class I was able to take because the movie industry is such an amazing industry and everybody want to be in the spot light. If I could do it all over again, I wouldnt change a thing. I am currently working on a documentary and have about 5 documentaries under my belt already. The cons of the degree are the following: Very time consuming, doesn't really prepare you for anything other then the film industry, stressfull, very long hours, classes are tough. The pros are the following: enjoyable, you get to make films, you friends envy what you are working on, class you look forward to attending. |

Photography:
A major in photography can help you get work in many different specialties, including product photography, portraiture, photojournalism, fashion, and advertising. If you're interested in pursuing those fields, then photography is for you. There are so many different careers to be had within photography, there is something to suit anyone with an interest in it. Some might want to travel the world, some open up their own studio, and some freelance for many different publications. The photography industry is something that is not going to go away, it is important in many different mediums. You could also get another degree in education and teach photography classes. A possibly con can be to break into the industry with so many heavyweights already in it, but once you find your special niche, it's a wonderful life. |

If you would like to be a Film major someday, you should be writing and making movies now! Most people I knew in film school had dabbled in home movies as kids and started a few feature length film scripts of their own. Any good film school will want to see examples of your work to gauge your potential, so you'll want to have something to show them. To have these samples, you'll have to do some trial and error first to find your voice. Also, seek feedback from family and friends who will tell you the truth about your work.
If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't hesitate to choose this major. I did not go into Film as a career, however, what I do is directly related and my studies directly prepared me for my current career in multimedia. What's more, my Film degree prepared me for a plethora of careers in that it gave me an excellent foundation in communcation, teamwork and technology skills. The good thing about having a Film degree is that you have a degree. The bad thing is that its a very competitive field. But, with hard work and determination, I'm sure most if not everyone can make something of themselves with a film degree just like with any other degree. |

Since graduating, I've learned that having a degree in film really is not crucial to success in the industry. It's more important that one has access to equipment and develops a good reel - the degree is ultimately irrelevant.
I think having a degree in film offers a few benefits for success in the industry. First, it gives a person exposure to production equipment. Second, it helps them make contacts with people who are also going to work in the industry - as they say, it's all about who you know, and that's especially important in Hollywood. Third, there are a lot of internship opportunities available to students in film, and studying film certainly gives you the advantage in securing an internship.
In my experience, like any major, people that have studied film aren't necessarily working in the industry. I work in a related industry but don't actually use my film education professionally - I use it more as a hobby and don't have much of an interest in ever going back to Hollywood. By the same token, I know many people who are successful in Hollywood who didn't actually study film. I can only think of a single person I know who studied film that has had some success with a career in the industry.
Film is my passion and I really do love it. If nothing more, studying film gave me the opportunity to spend 4 years studying something I absolutely love. That truly makes for a positive college experience, regardless of what I am actually doing with my film degree. |

Cinematography and Film / Video Production:
I would make sure you have a solid ambition. A drive to succeed and a tolerance for failure. This major and career are not for the faint of heart or the tentative. The work is not easy, and if you think it is you aren't soing it right. Your work will be critisized, scrutinized and compared to others, unlike any other class work. Be sure you diversify your other classes to get a solid background in life in general, especially if you are going to write/direct as well. Digital is king, use it, learn it, love it. Animate and draw, don't let nostalgia for dead technologies get in the way. This major can be extremely rewarding, it can also be a dead end. It is up to you how much you want to put into it. Make sure you choose a school with a good faculty. Do your homework about them, make sure they had the body of work and types of careers you can respect and learn from, they can be your best friends or your worst enemies. Good Luck. |
