Chemistry, General:
If you are considering a major in Chemistry then be sure you have a clear answer for someone asking you why you chose chemistry. Earning the degree can be very hard work but the work pays off in the long run even if your career goals are outside of the sciences. By majoring in Chemistry you are able to demonstrate that you have strong analytical abilities, an foundation for taking information from diverse sources to develop a thought out conclusion and a level of persistence. This degree is not an easy one to get but if you are going to college to learn vice party on your parent's dime, then you should consider a degree in chemistry. I did and I would gladly do it again as I have been able to apply what I learned to a myriad of situaitons. |

Physical and Theoretical Chemistry:
I have developed a growing love for chemistry. I had no idea how much I would learn outside of chemistry and not just about chemistry specifically, but how I have found interesting analogies between chemistry and life in general. How the uncertainty principle, though directed toward atomic theory, is very much a part of our inability to never really be sure of anything, that it's all uncertainly and relatively explained due to our lack of ability to measure anything perfectly, without error as we have little understanding of what infinity is. Perfect measurements require infinitely sensitive precision, but how can we do that. Everything is really just a theory as we will are uncertainly uncertain. I don't really care about the job factor anymore, but quantum mechanics has got me good, giving me a enjoyment for my previously hated calculus and physics. |

Chemistry, General:
While this major was difficult and required a lot of time, in the end it was very rewarding. You can get a good job right out of college or go onto graduate school, often with a full scholarship. I would probably choose this major if I was egining college for a second time. |

Chemistry, General:
My advice to the people who want to do this major is that u should have a flair and an interest for this subject without which u can feel u are heading nowhere. It is interesting to study science especially chemistry because it makes you aware of the various chemicals u use in everyday life like the ingredients in a shampoo, bath soap etc.the pharmaceutical part of chemistry is more interesting and is very useful if u are into research. The ingredients at the back of a tablet strip no longer is a mystery once u are into pharma field.chemistry also improves your practical skills.By doing experiments we see for ourselves the end results and are more convinced and understand better.Chemistry has a great scope too .it has a wide range of oppurtunities and a variety of jobs to choose from.one can branch out to do reserch in this field and in such a scenario coming out with a breakthrough is a rewarding experience and something useful to mankind.I would surely recommend people to choose this major ad yes i would love to study this subject again with great interest |

Chemistry, General:
I enjoyed chemistry as a major, it is actually very interesting. It is a difficult subject to study, so you need to be motivated. I would highly recommend studying chemistry as there are many job opportunities available....and, chemists are always needed, it is unlikely that these jobs can be outsourced overseas! One con of the job...you will probably be underpaid. I always felt way underpaid for my knowledge in my field. I would recommend getting more than just an undergraduate degree. |

Chemistry, General:
If you like science and need something better to fall back on instead of a biology degree, look into chemistry. A chemistry degree will allow you to work in jobs like quality control, biomedical technology, phamacutical manufacturing, and tons of other areas, getting paid a good deal of money. I opted to study chemistry because the courses weren't too hard and the information was interesting. You also get to play with different types of laboratory instruments and machines. It's a lot of fun. |

Polymer Chemistry:
Polymer Chemistry is one of the most versatile fields of study. It encompasses all the basic fields of chemistry and its applications are all around us. It has got immense potential for anyone who wishes to indulge in research and academia as well as industry. There are no strong prerequistes for this major and anyone who understands the basics clearly can go for it. It doesn't require a genius to excel in polymer science. Although it has become extremely challenging now with innovations cropping every day, there will always be room for anyone who wishes to cash on this gold mine. I would highly recommend this major who wants to have the most options in his or her hand after graduation. |

Chemistry, General:
I entered college knowing I wanted to major in one of the sciences, but couldn't decide between biology, chemistry, and physics. After taking the introductory classes for all three, I knew chemistry was the perfect choice for me. Logical, elegant, and fundamental, chemistry is more practical than pure mathematics, but doesn't involve the rote memorization of biology. Chemistry teaches you the why and the how, and then lets you apply those principles to whatever problem you need to address.
I do not regret choosing this major, but I do wish I'd taken more advantage of my liberal arts college by diversifying and attending more courses in the humanities. All the scientific knowledge in the world is useless unless you can communicate with others (this is why English and writing courses are critical for science majors); scientific knowledge doesn't do a bit of good without a frame of reference (history, sociology, and philosophy will give you that framework).
A chemistry degree, like any other natural science degree, is essential for a career in medicine, the research laboratory, or to pursue an advanced science degree. My career opportunities were numerous; I happened to stumble upon forensics and have been at it for eight years now. |

Chemistry, General:
Chemistry was always a fascination of mine. I think it's important for one to have a love and understanding of chemistry before they decide on it to be their major. Having a chemistry degree opens up a world of different opportunities. There are many different directions one can go in by obtaining a chemistry degree, whether going into the work force or on to a graduate school. When looking at anything in the world, it can always have a chemistry connection. I would most definately pick chemistry as my major if I were able to go back to my freshman year and pick a major. |

Analytical Chemistry:
With any science major, be ready to work hard -- you're not going to be out partying with the English, History, and PE majors.
Would I recommend studying Analytical Chemistry? If you love working in the lab, yes! If you would rather be at a desk -- no. If you want to make a lot of money -- double no. Although I love it, I don't know if I would major in it again knowing what I know now. I haven't made a lot of money, and I've had 3 laboratories close resulting in periods of unemployment lasting 4 weeks to 1 year. If you have the ability, Organic Chemistry offers more opportunities and job stability. Unfortunately I'm a terrible Organic Chemist, so that's not an option.
The pros of this career are that, if you can find them, environmental positions get you out of the lab and outside collecting samples so you're not locked in a building all day long. Of course this can also be a con when it's 90 - 100 degrees out with corresponding humidity or if it's -10 with a brisk 20mph wind blowing out of the North. Another pro is all the cool toys Analytical Chemists get to play with! GC's, HPCL's, Raman Spectroscopy... Nirvana to a science geek. The cons -- you may be testing sewage with all the cool toys.
I suggest trying to get a summer internship in an environmental or construction materials lab during high school or after your freshman year of college to see if this is something you want to pursue before you make the substantial time and financial investment a degree in the sciences requires. |

Chemistry, General:
Chemistry is a worthwhile, vast, and labor-intensive field of study; I recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed their previous exposure to the subject and doesn't mind spending a lot of their college days reading textbooks and working in the lab. If possible, I recommend that undergraduates prepare themselves for multiple career possibilities. It is tempting to decide that, "I'm going to be a teacher" or "I'm going to work in industry" without considering how that decision might limit your career options later on. Even if you absolutely love lab work, you will still survive taking a few education classes. Many, many chemistry majors spend portions of their career teaching and portions of it working in industry. Straight out of school, you may find it easier to get a job teaching than any other chemistry job, but this very much depends on the location where you are seeking work. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the local chemical industry wherever you are going to school; many internships are available for college chemistry majors, and they can provide a better source of income than you might expect as well as invaluable experience.
For me, chemistry was a wonderful major. I have no regrets about my choice, and envision myself both studying and doing chemistry for the rest of my life! |

Chemistry, General:
The hardest part for me was the math. At the university I go to, we have to take all the calculus. It can be hard, but of course if you just keep at it and you have a mind for science, I think you can do it. |
