Westmont is a fantastic school. There's a lot of great things there; the academics are solid, Santa Barbara is beautiful, and you can take fencing as a P.E class. But really, the greatest thing about Westmont, and the thing that makes it unique is the people. The professors are brilliant and wise and they want to get to know you. I've eaten dinner at professors' houses on several occasions, just so they could get to know me and mentor me, and many professors have open office hours to talk about class or just about life. Being able to benefit from these great Christian mentors is an awesome blessing.
And the other students are incredible. The community I found at Westmont was one that I haven't ever found before. People care about each other, deeply and truly, even people they haven't met. People are warm and open; I've met some of my best friends by sitting down alongside them at lunch and introducing myself, and they responded warmly. Granted, people aren't perfect at Westmont; you still have arguments and pettiness and bad things, but you are dealing with broken people, after all.
And Westmont gets it, that we're all broken people, but that we're all saved by grace. There are a lot of Christian schools that I've been exposed to where hypocrisy is just rampant; where pride and judgment are what rule. At Westmont, that's not the case. Love is king there, and although we condemn sin we acknowledge ourselves as sinners, and welcome those who are also broken. It's a good place. |
