WMU is a good school but you have to be able to navigate the red tape. The administration is pretty poor at working with students and, in fact, gives conflicting information to the detriment of the student. Fees, especially parking, are out of control. WMU has several excellent professors, though, and very friendly students. The University isn't outrageously activist, but also doesn't pander to conservatives. There is a nice diversity in the student body and in the community. I had a good experience at Western, but mostly due to Kalamazoo, the city in which WMU is located. I would choose to go to the school again as it is near my hometown -- and I would have missed out on living in Kalamazoo.

I graduated from the Haworth College of Business with a BS in Business Information Systems. The business college has some very qualified professors (as well as, of course, some bumbling incompetents), but the overall mix was very positive, and I've used a great deal of what I learned in those classrooms in the past 12 years. I think a good measure of the success of a degree is how quickly you pay it off, and it only took me 10 years to be free and clear. Kalamazoo is a great town with a lot to offer in terms of culture and fun. There's some extremely cheap off-campus housing, and a lot of part-time jobs to ease you into the working world. Moving to that town and going to WMU began the best part of my life.

Great school! Good social life. Business school and engineering are top notch. Kalamazoo is not a great town, but not too far from Lake Michigan. Tim Allen went here.

Western Michigan had a lot to offer in social incentives, and networking. However I do not feel the University did as good a job as it could have with prepping students for taking that step into the real world. Classes were informative, but in my major's case (film/video production), the information was not necessarily up-to-date...a lot of "learning" was done on personal time, at home and without the aid of an instructor.

Western was a step up from my previous community college experience. Trouble is, that's all it was. The councilors lead me to take classes I didn't need. I wanted to take some classes outside of my major, but was severly limited in what I could take without declaring a minor in other departments. Probably an average share of professors were research only, which is to say only around 25% of the computer department had recently held a job outside of teaching. All in all, I wouldn't suggest WMU, but you could do worse.
