Western Illinois University is a wonderful little hidden treasure- although sometimes when you are there, it does not seem that way. It was not until a few months after graduating that I realized how much I missed Western. It is a large campus in the middle of nowhere, but the small-town atmosphere is something you cannot experience anywhere else. The college itself is pretty amazing- thousands of students living on campus, a thousand or so living off campus in the neighborhood, each student a thinking, thriving mind with ideas to share. There are activities for everyone- dozens of different clubs, sports teams and sports clubs, weekend movies, concerts, conferences, and volunteer activities. There are a golf course and a frisbee golf course. The professors are generally good- there are a few rotten apples, but every university has to have those professors that are only teaching for the paycheck, and at Western they are few and far between. There are a lot of student jobs available on campus, although most are basically in food service- still, you could do worse. The main con with Western is also one of those things I miss most now- the small town atmosphere. If you enjoy college parties and going to bars, Western is a great choice for you. If, however, these aren't your scene (as they weren't mine), there is little to do on the weekends. My friends and I spent a lot of time in our dorm rooms watching movies or wandering around Walmart, spending money we didn't have and leaving us with credit card debt we couldn't afford. Still, I won't lie, I miss the midnight trips to Walmart to help pass the time. |
