It is an easy school to get into and most of the classes are just as easy to get by in, depending on your major. If you want to get a college degree without working very hard, it is a good school for you. However, the quality of the education offered at Virginia Commonwealth University consistently exceeds the quality of the typical student attending it. There are actually a lot of really good professors teaching there. If you want to work hard and learn, you will not find yourself disappointed. But good luck finding people in Richmond who have that interest in common with you. Richmond is a typical southern city. People tend to be slower and less ambitious. If this does not describe your personality, you might find yourself really frustrated at this particular university, unless of course, you work well with such conditions. You might have notions that the city or the city campus is filled with culture. Such is not the case for this school. People have no drive and are not willing to work together to create community. While there may be some art galleries, performances, and other 'cultural' events, as well as the residuum of a counterculture that has not thrived since the eighties, Richmond is in the cultural dregs. Romanticize it all you want but it is a city with no passion. Art here is just as dead as religion. Expect nothing new and original to ever come out of this city or this university unless you yourself are bringing it. If you just want to go to college and do the routine kind of thing, it's a better school than you might think. |

Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) is a great school for Virginians of color, as an out of state white student I felt very unwelcome. My major department (forensic science) was wonderful, however, all dealings I had with financial aid, registration, and the bursars office were extremely uncomfortable. I was denied a work study position because of my race. I would recommend this school to any students of color or any Virginia resident. For out of state students, I don't feel the very high tuition was worth it. The basic academic coursework is not very rigorous, so, it might be a good choice for someone needing a high GPA for graduate school. Many of the individual departments (especially in the sciences) are very strong and well respected academically. The school has been extremely well funded making lab equipment, the library, and computer labs are all very modern. Warning: If you have not visited or been around the Richmond area this campus is very political. Rallies and protest type activities occur on a regular basis. Campus security is not the best. (Case in point: the murder of freshman in 2005.) |
