Madison is a great school with lots to offer. You've got to be a pretty intense person, as the academics and social scenes both make some serious demands. It's such a large school, you've got to find your niche, your social group and, if you're smart, an academic club, group or organization early or you'll get lost. I really think the key is to find a group and stick with it; in a school of 40,000, you've got to have a smaller group to belong to or you're going to get lost.
Overall, UW-Madison is a great place. The academics are superb and you'll never be lacking something to do on friday night. |

Madison is an ideal college town. It is on three lakes, all of which have nice waterfront areas. Memorial Union, the main student union, is on Lake Mendota and has a great outdoor area which, when it is warm enough, has great outdoor, free concerts, and they book some pretty decent acts. The Union is also one of the few wet unions left (they serve beer).
State St, the main drag for student life, has lots of cheesy restaurants, some nice restaurants, and is mostly affordable. There are also tons of bars which cater to anyone from the frat/sorority kid, to the hippie to the punk rocker.
Madison also a lot of culture for a city of its size. There are a lot of good music venues, a decent number of art galleries, and plenty of oddball shops.
The school, specifically the professors, are hit or miss. Most of the 100 level lectures are 300 plus students, and many of the profs who teach them are more concerned with their research than their students. Once you get to more advanced classes, however, there are a lot of good, intelligent professors, and if you do your research you can find interesting classes no matter your major. UW Madison has strong programs in a lot of different majors, so if you're the typical freshmen and you're not sure what you want to study, it is hard to go wrong with UW.
Because the school is so big, there is room for lots of different types. If you are a nerd (no need to be ashamed), there are a lot of nerds. If you are a big partier, madison has its share of those.
The negatives start with the weather. From November to the end of february, many students go into hibernation mode. Also if you are attracted to madison for it's rep as a party school, you may want to reconsider. UW Madison students know how to party, but classwork can be pretty demanding, so around midterm and final time, there isn't much going on. Also as far as racial diversity, UW Madison is almost completely white. There are very few minority students -- I believe something like 80% of african american students who are enrolled are there for sports. |

My experience at the UW was largely positive. I learned a lot, knowledge that I still use today, almost everyday. I would definitely recommend this college. If I had to do it over again, I would go to a small, highly-rated liberal arts college like Williams or Amherst, because I realized later that you really miss out on valuable discussion, and highly qualified professors that teach at these colleges. I had a lot of graduate students as professors as a Psych. major, and I'm sorry, but they're teaching you stuff they just learned a few years ago. Some real prof's re-used their old lectures, which seemed dated and even rough. Also, because of the class size in psych., ( usually 100-200) i had a lot of multiple choice exams, which I don't tend to do as well on. Not a lot of critical thinking, there.
The other thing I didn't like so much was the lack of diversity. Almost everyone was just like me: white, from a small town in the midwest.
The last thing I didn't like was the advising in the psych. dept. The advisors really don't seem to care about you, and see you as a number, not an individual.

I would absolutely, without a doubt, recommend this college. If you are considering this school at all, at least plan a visit to tour the campus. When you see how happy and polite people are around the city, you will understand why this is such a great school. If I had to do it over again, I would absolutely again choose this school. The faculty are incredibly helpful and smart, the students are very friendly, and the city atmosphere is fantastic. The only con I can think of is that it gets relatively cold in the winter, this being Wisconsin. However, there are plenty of parties dispensing various beverages to keep you warm! |
