My four years at UVa were by far the best four years of my life so far. I can honestly say that there is not a single thing that I would change about my college experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is fortunate enough to be granted acceptance.
For incoming first years, I would recommend living in the "old dorms" if you desire a more social atmosphere. Although there are more people sharing a bathroom and the buildings are older, the hall atmosphere as opposed to the suite setup allows for more interaction and socialization. During the spring semester, a lot of people rush sororities or fraternities but you can still have tons of fun without doing so. I had lots of friends in these organizations but I never pledged and had just as much fun hanging out with people from all different groups. That being said, be sure to set aside time to actually do your reading for class and to show up for class. There is never a lack of things to do, and most people who attend UVa never had to study hard in high school so adjusting to the fact that everyone there is just as smart and balancing work and play can prove challenging without careful planning.
Try to stay in Charlottesville at least one summer while you're there even if you don't do summer session. The atmosphere is more relaxed and you're able to really get to know new and different people that you may not ordinarily meet during the regular school year.
Traditions are a big part of the UVa experience. Take part in them - call the campus "the grounds", streak the lawn, and dress up for a football game, even if just one time.
Have fun and cherish your four years - they go by quickly! |

With a beautiful campus (or "grounds" as the Wahoos call it), and a host of quirky and charming traditions, UVA was a blast for me as an undergrad. It has an excellent English Departments and a top-notch Architecture school. Like many other state schools in Virginia, it's also a great value. And it was the school for Edgar Allan Poe, whose room near the Lawn is now an attraction. I'd definitely re-enlist if I had it to do over again, and I heartily recommend it. One con is that some classes are rather large, and you can feel lost (If you want a tiny, personal school, William and Mary is excellent, and just down the road in Williamsburg, VA). One piece of advice I'd give is to try to take a course with Jan Perkowsi, a Slavic languages professor who has taught a course on vampirism. Also, get someone to take you out to Crozet to get the pizza. |

The University of Virginia has a beautiful campus in Charlottesville, Virginia. The buildings are inspired by, and indeed the lawn was designed by, architect and former president Thomas Jefferson. Undergraduate size is between 12,000 and 13,000, which may seem like quite a few students, but personally, I see people that I either know or at least recognize all the time.
One thing that is very important to keep in mind when considering the University of Virginia is that undergraduate students are limited to a maximum of four years (eight semesters). There are ALMOST no exceptions to this rule, unless you are a scholarship athlete or have extenuating circumstances. If you're not able to complete your degree within eight semesters, you will not get a degree from the Univeristy and will be forced to transfer your credit to another institution. |
