UNC is a good school. Many people all around the country have heard of UNC, and it has been ranked the best public education for the best price by the Princeton Review. The campus is beautiful, and the dorms range from old but charming to new and progressive on North Campus, and generally, old and awful on South Campus. The education I've received thus far has left me with mixed feelings. The big lecture classes that you take as freshmen and sophomores usually give you poor grades as well as a poor understanding of the material. As you decide on a major, you take better and better courses, with better teachers, and with smaller classes. The Greek life is important to UNC, and it is utterly unbearable to anyone who is not in a fraternity or sorority. Although UNC is thought to be a liberal university, it is mostly conservative, with a scattered amount of very liberal people. I would recommend UNC to anyone that is outgoing and loves to party, or to anyone who is really ambitious concerning medical school-- which is a top program at UNC. It has a lot of offer, course wise, but what you do with your major is what mostly impacts your success from the transition from college to work. Overall, I have had several exceptional courses, many bad classes, a wide variety of interesting classes, mixed experiences with extracurriculars, and a couple fun times that every college student is ensured. |

UNC-Chapel Hill students have brains, but also know how to party and let their hair down with the best of them! With top-ranking programs (including Business Administration, Journalism, Information Sciences, etc.) top ranking athletic programs, and state of the art facilities, this University has the combination to make one's college years very memorable. This school is huge, not for those who like to be a big fish in a small pond. Also, because it is such a great deal for North Carolina residents, you may that the school is lacking in diversity as compared to other alternatives. If you are applying from UNC and you are out of state, be prepared to put your very best foot forward, and arrange your financing accordingly. Out of state students have a harder time getting accepted and tuition costs are substantially higher. Overalll, I wouldn't change a thing about my decision to attend UNC. I loved the experience of attending this top-notch school surrounded by a beautiful, top-notch campus. Go Heels! |

UNC-Chapel Hill is a great choice for anyone desiring a large-school atmosphere with plenty of opportunities to get involved in campus activities and meet other students. With an undergraduate population of approximately 16,000 (mostly in-state students), there is a good chance that you will meet people one night and not see them again all four years, however, you will meet enough people that you cannot walk through "the Pit", a social gathering area in the middle of campus, without seeing a friendly face. Dorm life offers ample time and situations to find your niche of friends in a close proximity, and various groups and clubs will further help each student meet people with interests similar to their own. The nightlife can be whatever students make of it at UNC. With over a dozen bars within walking distance from campus, students over 21 or with alternative IDs make this a frequent decision. The several clubs are usually packed on the weekends, especially "Players", owned by former Carolina athletes. Drinking in the dorms is prevalent, but there is a large enough percentage of students who choose not to that other activities such as poker, late night basketball on the outdoor courts, video games, and movies are just as widespread an option for most nights. Obviously basketball dominates UNC, but most varsity sports are supported by a fair sized student fan section. Baseball, wrestling, soccer, in particular usually draw good crowds to home games. Classes are competitive and some can be difficult for the average Carolina student, but teachers and TAs make a point of offering as many office hours as they can to help students on an individual basis. Dining facilities on campus are overcrowded and the food is often unsatisfying, leading many students to opt for food on Franklin St or elsewhere on a daily basis and many students either move out of the dorms or sacrifice their dining plan after their freshman year. The campus itself is beautiful, and the weather is largely nice throughout the school year, though heat and humidity can be severe for students living in the dorms without air conditioning. Another negative exclusive to dorm life is the incessant construction being done around the campus. This often early morning each day, and is the bane of existence for those unlucky enough to be in a dorm within the sound of it. Despite several negatives, UNC-Chapel Hill has something to offer for everyone, and is a great school full of opportunity. The overwhelming majority of students love the school and are full of pride at being a Tar Heel. |
