The
University of Minnesota Duluth (
UMD) regional university part of the University of Minnesota System located in
Duluth, Minnesota. The school offers 12 bachelor's degrees in 75 majors. As well as a two-year program at the
School of Medicine and a four-year College of Pharmacy program. UMD offers graduate programs in 19 fields.The Minnesota State Legislature created
the
Normal School at Duluth in 1895. In 1921,
the institution became the
Duluth State Teachers College, and in 1947 it became a
coordinate campus of the University of Minnesota.UMD's campus consists of more than 50 buildings on 244 acres (1 km²) overlooking Lake Superior, all built since 1948. Most UMD buildings are connected
by concourses or hallways. UMD is also home for the Tweed Museum of Art; the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium; Weber Music Hall,
and the Marshall Performing Arts Center. Other UMD facilities include the Research and Field Studies Center; Glensheen Historic
Estate; the Lower Campus; the Large Lakes Observatory; and the Natural Resources Research Institute.UMD's athletic teams are called
Bulldogs. The school competes in the NCAA's
Division II in all sports except hockey. Both the men's and women's hockey
programs compete in the Division I Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
