  The University of Maryland is a very good suburban campus 5 miles from Washington DC. The campus is huge and the student body diverse. Although this diversity is a plus it is also a problem on campus as there still seems to be be much division along race and nationality lines.
As for the academics, I would say that UMD is very good in the quality of education you will get over a 4 year period but that will depend on the major you choose. Some programs are stronger than others for sure but there is something for everyone.
As for campus life, its best to live on campus if you can although 40% of the students commute. There are many clubs and activities on campus as well as a highly developed Greek system. Nationally ranked sports teams are a big attraction on campus and great social outlets.
As for the party life, there are several well established bars in College Park right off the campus as well as a subway line that takes you into DC for the party scene in the city.
Overall, I would recommend this college but with a warning - keep up your grades as they are quick to put you on probation here!!!
I think everyone will enjoy going to UMCP if they are social - campus life can be very lonely for those who are not.

  It's a good school with a lot of academic opportunities. The administration is a nightmare, though, with forms and paperwork and files and redirects and no-you-want-that-department. It's worth it, though, once everything is straightened out. The dorms and dining halls are overpriced and not worth the huge amount of money you spend on them. You're required to get a meal plan, but I couldn't even use half of the required meal points, and there are no refunds. I'd recommend staying off campus somewhere, as you can get a cheap apartment for the same price as a dorm room, and you wouldn't have any roommates if you don't want any. If you like sports and partying, you won't have any trouble fitting in, and there are lots of clubs for people who aren't party animals, too.

  Maryland has a little bit of everything. It's close to D.C. and Baltimore if you like venturing out into the city, it's on a beautiful campus and the sports teams are second to none. Academically, the school is a rising star and competes with the best of them in almost every category that counts. The only draw back is that the social scene can be dominated at times by the Greek system, but the school's big enough that anyone can find their own niche and thrive.

  The school is very good from a learning perspective. The teachers are knowledgeable and helpful with only a few exceptions. The administrative side is less helpful, to change majors requires that you speak with four or five different advisors, who can also be very difficult to get in touch with. If you are prepared to be at a large school and are able to deal with a less personal atmosphere it is a good place to get an education.

  The University of Maryland, College Park is an excellent school. The campus is beautiful, and the professors are top-notch. I fell in love with the school the first time I visited. Prospective students should be aware that it's a big school, with tons of students. That might make some people wary of becoming just a number, but it also makes for an increased amount of opportunities. There are clubs for every interest. Traffic and parking are 2 major headaches, but if you live on campus, you avoid those. The college is also very convenient to the metro DC area. The students are extremely diverse, and there's a lot to do.

  The Univ of MD is a very large, very diverse university just outside Washington, DC. If you want the Greek life it's there, if you want to be a commuter student the U of M makes that very easy, if you want to blend in and be anonymous the U of M makes that easy, if your politics are far left or far right you'll find fellow travelers. The basketball teams are great but if you want to ignore sports it's possible. There are lots of people from New Jersey at the school. Because of the proximity to Wash, DC, there is a lot to do close-by, and the subway comes to within a mile of the campus so you can get into the city easily. It's a medium-tough school; you'll get a good education but you won't have your hand held in the process. If you want great ice cream this is the school for you (the ag school was always historically a big part of the school and cows are still raised on the campus and ice cream is made and sold on the campus. The ice cream has a very high fat content and is therefore heavenly.)

  UMCP is huge. Ridiculously huge. So my advice is to keep your world at a size you can handle: your dorm, your sorority/fraternity/organization... Make friends you can count on and who can count on you. Don't drink alcohol. Chances are you're underage, so there is no point. Make time to study. People will be in your face to party all of the time at UMCP -- buckle down and study. Make sure you allot enough time for sleep. Eat nutritious meals. And be sure to make time just to be and to have fun. Do all that and your experience at a very large, demanding school that features too many partiers will be very successful, and the education you receive will be excellent. Have a great time at UMCP. And FEAR THE TURTLE!

  Come here and be a part of the Terps
A new ranking of graduate school programs in the U.S. published recently by The Chronicle of Higher Education puts the University of Maryland at number 11 among all public research universities.

The Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, a new method of ranking graduate programs in the U.S., ranked 19 UM graduate programs in the top ten and three programs (criminology, linguistics, and nuclear engineering) ranked number one. The new rankings were partly financed by the State University of New York at Stony Brook and were produced by Academic Analytics, a for-profit company. The index rates faculty members' scholarly output at nearly 7,300 doctoral programs around the country based on the number of book and journal articles published by each program's faculty, as well as journal citations, awards, honors, and grants they receive.
