University of Kentucky is a research-minded institution aspiring for top renown in research and academics. It is currently ranked within the Top 20 schools in the southeast and has earned prominence in various fields. Objectively, UK isn't a bad school; it just wasn't a good place for me for different reasons.
The admissions process is fairly straightforward, but it's difficult to secure good funding. I thought I had all of my I's dotted and T's crossed on my forms, but I forgot to send one document to a specific random person in financial aid; thus, I was unable to receive anything my first semester. Office extensions and locations aren't always reliable either. I was often sent back and forth between two or three people before getting a good response. Bless the heart of my financial aid counselor, but she frequently forgot that I was a graduate student and couldn't get hold of the everyday grants and state options like undergrads get.
My department was initially part of an independent college. My second year, the college was dissolved and my department was reassimilated into another larger college which, spatially, was nowhere near us. (Agriculture on South Campus -- I was smack dab in the middle of Central) Folks in the College of Ag were hardly responsive or communicative. I only had to see them a couple of times for various fall orientations. The students were made promises of increased funding opportunities, none of which actually panned out.
The staff had a lot of overhaul too, and it felt difficult to stay connected with faculty. New people came in. People left. I couldn't imagine how difficult it would be to organize a graduate committee within all that upheaval. Thankfully, I just had to complete a sustained case study to substitute for the thesis.
Fewer funding opportunities meant pairings of professors and research assistants made little sense. I worked for someone doing family finance, and I never took an accounting course in my life! Only at the end of my program did I get a part-time gig that even made sense for a family studies/therapy major to take.
Finances stayed tight. My monthly stipend made it difficult to cover rent and expenditures. We were encouraged NOT to work; I couldn't afford to do that. Because departments don't talk to each other very much, locating outside opportunities was even more difficult. I stuck to waiting tables.
No summer funding and required summer courses to graduate on time meant being broke. There was no way around this.
The academic and clinical training was enjoyable for the most part. I contend that I got a solid education, albeit from overtaxed, overstressed, and often indifferent leaders in my department. The few faculty members that made it worthwhile, I continue to keep in touch and ask for further professional support, for which they are responsive and helpful.
Overall, if I had to do it over again, I would not have selected UK. I entered a rigorous step program that made it difficult to get by on secure funding and I felt like I didn't get the chance to pursue other professional opportunities in my time. Not too long into the program, I developed a mentality of wanting-out. I felt inconsistently enriched and challenged for my troubles, and it was difficult transitioning from a private liberal arts institution in which I felt personally and professionally shaped, than from a public eye dog that just wants to get to the top. |
