I would definitely choose KU again. In general, the campus and community is safe, and the campus is well maintained. Most instructors are willing to help you if you're struggling if you utilize their office hours. Being a big state university, it can be tough to make friends sometimes because there are so many people, but there are tons of groups to join so that definitely helps. If the greek system is your thing, then KU provides that, but if you're not, there's plenty of other events and groups. If you need help in some area (career planning, finding a job after graduation, counseling, etc.), definitely visit the appropriate on campus office, as they are very helpful. |

KU is an excellent university on a beautiful campus. Majoring in physics, I have been able to take advantage of a host of excellent professors and resources over the past four years. Although the KU physics department does not have its own major research facilities, a number of collaborative projects exist that give students the opportunity to work with and travel to installations such as CERN. My friends in the physics and chemical engineering departments who graduated last year have all gotten into excellent grad programs or now have stable jobs and KU has a number of other excellent programs, such as architecture. KU offers a variety of student lifestyle options, including dorms, the scholarship halls (highly recommended), and nearby off campus living. Downtown Lawrence is a wonderful community complete with music venues, many types of cuisine, coffee shops, a great hookah bar, and myriad other enjoyable options. My only complaint with the school is that gigantic lecture hall classes are unavoidable; any student will have to take a few during their undergraduate career. My only complaint with the community is that the Greeks (frats and sororities) on campus are often rude and violent. Living in the scholarship halls for three years was incredibly fun, but the scholarship hall parking lots are near the Greek bars and over the course of three years my car suffered over a thousand dollars of damage thanks to drunk Greeks parking illegally in our spots and later hitting or otherwise damaging cars while drunk driving home. It was not uncommon for a scholarship hall kid to find their mirror broken or door dented in Friday, Saturday, or Sunday morning. We also had to walk girls back to the women's halls because of fear of harrassment by drunks. My girlfriend and I also had beer bottles thrown at us out of a Tahoe with fraternity letters on the back while we were biking downtown. KU is a great school, although it is a little large. Lawrence is a great town, but the Greeks are terrible here (I know that they aren't bad everywhere from experience, this is not an indictment of all Greeks). |
