The university of Illinois is a great school for a large scale learning environment. It had the best courses to offer in many majors including engineering, aerospace engineering, art, education, and many more. Every class is challenging, but learning is a guarantee. The school provides a great environment to meet people, learn, and expand your expectations on life. The dorm, public and private, are great for being on your own for the first time. Then for upper class, there are a plethora of apartments. The nightlife is always active, and there is always an experience to be had. It is an extremely large school, and the mere size brought the rating score down a point, but after attending, I can not picture myself being anywhere else. |

Highly recommended. Although the town revolves around the campus and is dead without it, the campus itself makes up for the dead town. Parties every night, a HUGE range of student organizations, and overall excellent colleges. College of Engineering is ranked 4th in the country and the rest of the colleges lie within the top 25. Highly social students. Nice bit of diversity. Oh, and it is the largest Greek Community in the nation. However, this doesn't exclude those not looking to join a Fraternity/Sorority, as everything else is top notch as well.
As for cons, I can't think of many. I guess I wish that restaurants in the area took college meal credits, but I've heard about an organization starting up to try to get such a program going. The Campus isn't too big or too small. Transportation more or less gets you wherever you want to go at atleast half hour intervals, but many opt to use bikes to get around some tricky stop schedules.
I would definitely come here again, if I had to start from the beginning. I've had so many new experiences and it is so obvious that there is so much more to experience.
But yep, I highly recommend it. Overall good atmosphere, active students, and a helpful administration.
(Note: I'm currently in the College of (Mechanical) Engineering.) |

The University of Illinois (the main campus is at Urbana-Champaign), is a classic, large, mid-western state university. A member of the "Big 10", well known for football, fraternities and sororities and lots and lots of students! If you're the type of person who likes large crowds this the place for you. The positive side of a large campus is that no matter what you are interested in or how obscure that interest is, chances are someone shares it with you. You'll be able to join the the "Left-handed Moravian Fiddle Players Association" and have fun with people with whom you have something in common. Also, you have a much better chance of finding courses in less comon subjects or fields of study. The negatives are; getting lost in the crowd, feeling somewhat anonymous, and humongous campus,(bring good walking shoes). U. of I. is famous for sciences, engineering and of course computer science. The prevailing mood of the campus is very much "Engineering/tech" although, as mentioned, the place is so big there are excellent departments and resources in a lot of the "Humanities". The library is nationally rated and in general this is a school with excellent resources for learning.
The student body is very diverse, very "easy-going Midwestern style", casual to downright sloppy dress and middle-of-the-road. Plenty of partying, but with lots of real serious studying going on too. (Check the library on Saturday night..)
I think folks who want intensive training in the arts, or smaller more personally oriented environment will perhaps feel more comfortable in smaller or more professionally oriented schools, but for a good general education, for sciences and tech U. of I. is great. |
