I found that the main advantage of the U of H was Houston itself. I've heard it referred to as boring, but I just felt that was because people spent most of their time doing things in the city. I'm sure U of Alabama is quite a lively campus. That may have a lot to do with lack of things to do in Tuscaloosa.
Got me? Good.
The university has a very good resources, and between the other universities and actually going out into the REAL world and asking (what, research? never), you can get a great education there.
If you're interested in partying go to one of those "schools". If you inquisitive and are interested in educated yourself (which is the only way you'll ever really learn anything) and would like a good base from which to do it, consider UH.

Your freshman year, stay on campus and join everything you might be interested in. Meet with your advisor to make sure that your in the right major as far as what you want to do. The CLASS counseling service is very helpful when you are not sure about what you want to major in. I would pick this college if I had to do it again, now that I am in law school and compare my undergraduate experience with my class mates, I always prove my school is better than theirs! The pros are the great campus, all of the things that are offered to you as a student, and the diversity! The Con's are Houston's humidity, large classes if you are intimidated by that, and the fact that many students leave off campus on the weekends. Make sure that you make friends that have cars if you already don't have one. It makes the situation better!
U of H is a great school for several reasons; it combines a major research university with a "small campus" feel, as most of the student body are commuters. It has world-class facilities, top-notch researchers, and a wonderful location minutes from downtown Houston.
Try not to get classes between 10-2, parking is the absolute worse, you virtually have to park 5 miles away to get to class, if you come at that time. Almost any other time, you can get a good spot & get to class on time!
