This is a good school for two types of undergraduates. Students that have received unpassable grades at other schools and are willing to still put in the work for a bachelors degree, and students looking for a cheap school and are not looking for a specialized degree such as medical or engineering.
Most of the staff is apathetic but they are very quick about getting things done. Some departments have easier to work with professors than others, though the school excels in Natural Sciences and Mathematics. There's not a lot to get involved with on campus though so its easy to feel very "on your own".
I probably would not attend this college if I started over, but that's due to my switching halfway through to a more specialized degree and having to take it elsewhere to improve my hireability.
U of H is big and Houston is SO big that you will have loads to do and many choices. Choices of majors, courses and activities. Alum refer to U of H as "Harvard on the ship channel". It has research, sports, close to NASA, solid undergrad and grad programs, active nation-wide alumni association - U of H has it all.
