For those interested in a small school, a nurturing environment, and an extremely diverse student body, UH-Hilo is a great pick. The school is a particularly good choice if your interests skew toward Earth sciences (geology, marine biology) or Pacific Rim issues (including, of course, Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures), but even for a basic liberal arts education, it excels. I was particularly impressed with the English program.
While it's hard to imagine a downside to attending college in Hawaii, keep in mind a few things about this particular campus within the University of Hawaii system. First and foremost, Hilo is not Waikiki. It is a very small town. While I loved Hilo, many students - including those who've lived there for their entire lives - couldn't wait to leave. It is also located the "wet side" of the island, known for its rain, and distinct lack of vast, sunny beaches. Its multicultural makeup can make for some colorful experiences, not all of them positive. Also, things in Hawaii cost more in general, so keep this in mind when considering housing, food, and transportation.
Nonetheless, if you're looking for a small school offering a great education (fostering, hopefully, both intellectual and spiritual growth), UH-Hilo may very well be the best four-year university campus in Hawaii. |
