I am disappointed but not surprised by the overwhelming whiteness of this school. It is rare to see people of color, especially African-American students. Diversity levels are beyond poor. The campus itself, however, is exquisitely beautiful. Nestled at the breast of the Flatirons of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder is one of the most picturesque locales in the nation. The University of Colorado at Boulder is an exceptionally luxurious college location. Unfortunately, the university is run by a bunch of conservative idiots who don't seem to know the meaning of racism or sexism. Luckily, one can escape the ubiquitous stupidity of the campus and flee to nearby Chatuaqua Park. In the winter, of course, students constantly skip classes to ski in any of the beautiful ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains, most of them at a drive of two hours or less. The university even has a program that plans group trips to various mountain resorts for skiing and snowboarding. The quality of faculty varies greatly across departments, and class sizes range from very small (15 students) to very large lectures (400+ students). The general student body is profoundly materialistic and dumb, and most of them look alike. You can expect to see the same North Face jacket on at least fifteen girls in a ten-minute period. However, there are small pockets of black sheep, especially in the departments of Art, Media, Women & Gender Studies, LGBT Studies, and any one of the various music programs.
Overall, my college experience has changed my life. I would recommend this college to anyone who can't think for themselves and want to fit in. I would also recommend it to those who plan to use their parents' money to drink underage, smoke a lot of weed, and participate in various other kinds of illegal debauchery. I would not attend this college again if given the choice, but I would live in Boulder (only in the summer, however, as most of the above described students have returned to Southern California by then). I warn you that racism and to a lesser degree sexism is rampant on this campus. There have been various incidences of threats and violence perpetrated by white students on students of color. There is also a great anti-gay sentiment among the general campus population, but queer students may find a niche at the GLBT Resource Center and in various similar groups on campus. |

The University of Colorado, also known as CU, in my experience, is a wonderful college in that, it offers an number of differing majors and is open to almost any and every type of student. It also sports one of the greatest campuses I have ever seen, one of the largest in the country, and also it can lay claim to one of the largest libraries in the country, Norlin Library. The only down side might be its reputation as somewaht of a party school, but beyond that, it is an excellent institution. |

For people considering CU Boulder, I would tell them to remember that it is a very large, somewhat impersonal school. The student body is very white, middle to upper class, and there really is very little diversity at the school. Classes are very large, and people tend to make friends either through the Greek system, their dorms, or sports. There generally is not a strong academic ethic at the school - you often get the sense that it's permanently the last month of everyone's senior year. Because of this, if you're academically inclined, you really have to take it upon yourself to get the education you want.
Many people believe that Boulder is liberal, independent, free-spirited, etc. That was the Boulder of the 60s & 70s. Today, the residents are wealthy and conservitive. People are very interested in themselves - their health, their food - but not so much the community. Boulder is a beautiful place, and living in Colorado is wonderful. The amenities of the area are hard to match - skiing, biking, hiking, mountain climbing - all right in your back yard.
I'm lucky enough to be a Colorado native. But given the choice to do it over, I would not have gone to CU. I would have chosen a smaller school with more diversity and a stronger academic ethic. |
