This is a very fun and exciting school to be a part of. If you enjoy college sports, the school has the football stadium, basketball arena, and baseball field on campus. The classes are never too big, and the teachers are usually very responsive. The campus is beautiful with the more central locations having buildings from the 60s and 70s, while the exterior has buildings that have been made in the last few years, allowing for both an old and new feel. If you are applying here and wish to live on campus, housing rates are rising, but the convenience of being on campus can outweigh it. Also, for being the sixth largest university in the country, you would never know it. I would definitely go here if I had to choose again. |

UCF provides a wonderful undergraduate experience. It has a beautiful campus, good resources, and is located within half-an-hour of all the Orlando area has to offer. It offers a classes in many subjects, and the large student body virtually guarantees you'll find someone with shared interests. No matter what you're interested in, UCF is a good place to study it.
Not that UCF is perfect. Because it was founded in 1963, it still doesn't have a strong reputation, academically or athletically. It is improving, though. Also, UCF is a commuter campus, and living in the UCF area is almost impossible without a car. If you don't or can't have a car, then live on campus or at one of the campus affiliated apartment complexes. Anywhere else and you'll be able to tell your kids how you hiked through 90 degree weather both ways to school.
Overall, though, UCF is a good school with a strong focus on undergraduate education. There's not another school in Florida that provides a better college environment. |

The University of Central Florida has a very good graduate school, but still needs several improvements to be an elite school. The graduate departments are given generous funding for research, and a variety of elective classes are available each semester, in addition to the required courses. Class sizes are small, in my experience no more than 15 students per class. Students' development as researchers is a top priority. The faculty are well trained; some in private industry, others in academia. The graduate departments are small enough to allow personal attention and partnerships between faculty and students.
Unfortunately, the university as a whole has several problems which inhibit the success of graduate programs. Parking on campus is a major problem. The student body consists almost entirely of commuters, but the parking spots-to-students ratio is approximately the same as universities with a large percentage of on-campus students. From the first day of classes until just before finals week, there are rarely any open spaces on campus between 9am and 5pm. Because of this, in my experience, parking was a 20-60 minute process. This can have serious consequences for students who are not prepared to arrive very early for class. Also, any university as large as UCF (~50,000 students) is likely to have a complex bureaucracy in place. Unfortunately, UCF is no exception. Seemingly simple tasks like getting class requirement overrides, correcting errors in tuition charges, and correcting mistakes on diplomas can be harrowing. The best way to protect against this is to go out of ones' way to make sure that no mistakes are made by the university initially, before such problems can develop.
Overall, the University of Central Florida has a dedicated, hard working faculty and staff, but its sheer size causes unfortunate problems for many students. Overall, however, students attending UCF are likely to receive an excellent education if they are willing to withstand the above annoyances. |

The University of Central Florida is vastly growing. Not only in the number of students enrolled, but the campus in itself seems to be expanding every year. If you are looking for a school in a large environment with endless possibilities, then UCF is right for you. Located in East Orlando, just 20 minutes away from Downtown, and 40 minutes away from Disney, it is convenient for both the person who adores the big city, and the ones who just want to stay in a close, moderate community on campus.
In 2007 alone, a brand new 4 story parking garage opened increasing availability for parking for students and faculty. Also, a new, on campus football stadium will open the 2007 football season against former national champions the University of Texas. Likewise, a 10,000-seat arena is being erected in which they will hold not only basketball and volleyball games, but commencements, mixed martial art events, and concerts, to name a few. This past year, the arena held events such as two Combat Fighting Championships, Death Cab for Cutie played as part of their tour, and this April, the Killers will be playing there. Not to mention when Homecoming arrives, comedy acts such as Bob Saget, the late great Mitch Hedburg, and Dane Cook have all performed at UCF's arena.
However, you do not want to choose your school based on what the entertainment is that comes here. UCF offers various degrees in both graduate and undergraduate courses. From theatre to finance to film to nursing, UCF offers a wide variety of opportunities for everyone to excel in their own talents. For example, students from UCF came up of the concept of the Blair Witch Project, which grossed over $248 million world wide. The WB televsion channel also devised a reality tv show filmed at UCF called Big Man on Campus (from the creator of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette), using students of the school and, ended after the completion of one season.
However you look at it, there are always going to be flaws. There are many parking garages and lots, but with the evergrowing population coming to the school every year, parking becomes much more difficult. The dorms are mostly new, and a great place to start, but with many apartment complexes around the area, traffic becomes much more difficult to cope with, especially with the stadium opening soon, it will only make your traffic troubles increase.
Though if you don't have a car, and want to live off campus, most apartment complexes located around the campus offer a free shuttle to students to and from campus. UCF has their very own police department for a seemingly small campus, though they can be a pain at times, it helps you feel safer, especially in a new environment.
If I could do it over again, I definitely would. Choosing a school is a very important decision in ones life, I search through various universities located in Florida, and UCF appealed to me the best more than FSU or USF. The area is fit for a college, and the school has numerous courses and degrees to help you excell in life. If you would like more information on UCF, please go to http://www.ucf.edu |

UCF is a good school as far as Florida state schools are concerned, but I wouldn't call it a "great" school. I'm not sure I would choose to go there again if I had the chance to do it all over. Financially, UCF (and most Florida state institutions) is great though. However, right now the university is trying to increase enrollment to something around 50k students, while not increasing parking. Their parking solution is to somehow have satellite lots (a church parking lot is used as one right now I think) and shuttle students to campus. More money is poured into sports than academics and academic services, where it should belong. A football stadium is currently being built, which is completely unnecessary. They tore down a beautiful arboratum to build "Engineering 3", because we all know that 3 engineering buildings are necessary. And then they knocked down acres of trees to build new apartment style housing. The trees looked nicer.
As far as education, class sizes will range from 22 students (in the honors college classes) all the way up to 400 in introductary lectures. My average class size was around 50 students for a technial major. I felt that some professors cared about the students more than others. While I liked the lectures of 400 because you could fall asleep, go on your laptop, or just not show up, they were also very impersonal and I feel as if I learned a lot more from smaller classes. Thankfully only the core classes for a lot of majors, and general education requirements, are that large.
Oh, and the entire campus is pretty much wireless EXCEPT for the dorms. I don't know why they didn't put wireless in the dorms, but some day they might.
The campus itself is nice, and there are a lot of things going on, and organizations to join. |
