UCSC is an amazing with eye opening and enriching academics as well as a natural environment that cannot be beat. Don't be deterred by the hippie stereotype; there are a wide variety of people here and anyone can find their niche. For me, the best part of UCSC is the area. The school is surrounded by evergreen trees, families of deer roam freely, and the beach is a quick 10 minutes busride downtown. As a freshman living in the dorm, you'll find that the rooms are spacious and the bathrooms are clean. Plus, the dining halls are amazing! There are 10 different college communities that make up the school and Cowell College, the original college, has the best dining hall. There are always delicious vegetarian and vegan options, made to order personal pizzas, organic salad bars, and to-die-for soft serve ice cream flavors. The only drawback of the school is the scale of the campus; it takes me 30 minutes to walk across campus! You don't mind all the walking though because of the beautiful scenery. For the less walking inclined, there are shuttle buses that will take you around campus very quickly. |

Santa Cruz is a fantastic place to study at if you like small class-sizes and being in a relatively small town. The campus is gorgeous, with the majority of it set in the woods. It is very hilly though, so it's not necessarily a place where you can go to class in stilettos. There are lots of things to do around here if you're an outdoorsy person; there are beaches, mountains nearby, woods, etc. There isn't a huge bar scene, but there are enough parties so that you could go to one if you wanted to. A lot of people hang out downtown, but it's really small. Downtown is really just one street (Pacific Avenue) and it's about 1-2 miles long. In general, people are very laid back and accepting. Santa Cruz is a little separated from "the rest of the world", but if you have a car you're an hour and a half or so's drive from San Francisco if you crave a big city. The great thing is that here you really don't need a car; your fees pay for a year-round bus pass, and the public transportation system here is excellent. There isn't a lot of cultural diversity here, but that is changing as the university is trying to become less of a hippie Humanities school and it is focusing more on the Sciences. Santa Cruz was my first choice, and if I had to do it all over again, I'd love to come here again. It was the perfect fit for me. |
