Tips for students: Ask about your major requirements asap to the undergraduate advisor of your major. Some classes are only offered once a year, and it's important to plan ahead for those classes. If you can, take a summer session. You can knock many units out of the way and the cost for the whole summer is less then half of one quarter's tuition. I suggest that if you need help in a subject, talk to your TA asap, they love being visited during office hours and it will help you.
I highly recommend this college. It is labelled as a "party school", and I detest that title. If you are someone who likes to party, it is easy to do that here, but if you are an academic student who is into studying hard, it is equally easy to do that too. Make sure to find a happy balance. The atmosphere is really chill and relaxed, people are very nice. The housing is great, the town is great, the professors are amazing, our extra curricular activites know no bounds, and our sports are doing great! |

Well, let's see, it's sunny, has a beautiful student population, a broad array of majors, and 5 Nobel Prize winners in the last 8 years. Some tips: expect to do work, the school's "Party Hearty" image isn't completely true, classes are demanding. I would definitely recommend this college, and would still go there again if I had to do it over again. Pros: beautiful population, climate, quality of education. Cons: it's easy to get caught up in the party life common among students. Students might not know that UCSB is the up and coming UC school, and is the 13th best ranked public school by US News in the country. |

I loved UC Santa Barbara and would reccomend it to anyone. You can't find a more beautiful campus and location that Santa Barbara. The campus is literally on the beach, the weather is nice, the people are very attractive, there are tons of things to do, oh yeah and the "academic part" is great too. The university offers degrees is many different areas. The faculty is top notch, the research facilities are state of the art. There are tons of clubs and organizations to get involved in.
Of course UCSB is known as a party school (and there are tons of great parties) but it is also a very credible institution. Ranked in the top 50 universities nationwide accroding to US news. There are several nobel prize laureate faculty members. But like I said if youre looking for a good party, there are plenty. Isla Vista "IV" is the college town right next to campus and that's the lace to find the parties. Specifically on Del Playa Drive "DP" which is the stret in IV closest to the beach (note in general, the closer you are to the beach, the more noise and partie you have - remember this when deciding were to live). You can find a part every night but dont get in over your head!!
Everyone rides bikes. Bring a bike, but dont buy a sparkling new one, bike theft is the biggest crime on campus. A used beach cruiser is perfect.
Plenty of on campus housing for freshman and first year transfers. Some dorm rooms have ocean views. There are three dining commons all of which are new or reently renovated.
Professors are very approachable, Large introductory lecture classes have smaller discussion groups with teaching assistants, there are GREAT cultural events (performances, lectures, etc) to attend through the Arts & Lectures program with discount prices for students and some events are free. There are also tons of great cultural events in the SB community. Downtown SB is fabulous, great shopping on State Street, every kind of restaurant, clubs, etc.
Plenty of outdoor activities too, beach camping, hikes, Internurals through UCSB. Jogging paths on campus and along the beach. |
