I highly recommend UC Davis. If you live in California, your tuition is affordable, especially with the financial aid package the university offers. In addition, UC Davis consistently ranks in the top 50 universities nationwide. I received a world-class education that didn't send me into terrible debt.
The campus is beautiful and quite large. The city of Davis has cute shops and great restaurants. Very bike friendly. Most UC Davis students own a bike to get around campus and the downtown area. Shopping is within walking distance of campus.
One great feature is the Unitrans Bus system. UC Davis students drive the buses through their work-study programs. The buses go all over town, even to the apartments far away from campus. The buses drop you off all over UC Davis. They're very convenient.
Classes are usually offered MWF or TTh. That's great if you work part-time. If you register early and plan out your classes well, you can arrange your entire schedule to fall on MWF or TTh.
Downsides: Although there are apartments all over Davis, they're both expensive and hard to find. If you are looking for an off-campus apartment for Fall Quarter, call in March. They're all gone by June. Students try to sublet them for the summer. You probably won't be able to afford to live on your own. Low-end one bedrooms go for $750+. The good news is that a lot of them offer free wireless internet and cable TV.
Also, let's talk about the quarter system. It's very intense. If you're majoring in a subject like science, math or even history, your load of classes will be overwhelming. Three classes (at four units a piece) is full-time. You have to cram a semester's worth of material into thirteen short weeks. If you are taking three history classes in one quarter, for example, expect to read 100+ pages per class per week. If you do have a major that requires a lot of reading, I suggest you try to mix your major classes with at least one fun class or else you'll go crazy.
