What an excellent college to attend. The University of Arizona is a top notch research university. It has an excellent reputation in medicine, optics, astronomy, social and behavioral sciences, and other areas of study. The campus is centrally located in the city and, though it is large, sports a top notch university wide transportation system that is free to students. The personnel are accessible, friendly, and eager to make one's college experience significant and productive. Furthermore, it is immediately surrounded by good restaurants, bars, cafes, and other amenities. I find this university so pleasant that I was reluctant to leave. So much so that I am pleased to continue on to my graduate education here.
Presently, as of January 2009, the state legislature is cutting the budget for all Arizona universities by 25%. This will most likely result in the elimination of some colleges and the necessary loss of personnel. The University has been attempting to respond by reorganizing the bureaucracy, increasing tuition, and increasing admissions. This will result in poorer services for incoming and existing students. |

The University of Arizona is a 4-year University with a wide range of offerings. The campus population is about 35,000 for undergraduates, with about a third of that living in on-campus housing. There is a vibrant community on and near the campus, which contributes to the experience; however, many of the neighborhoods immediately adjacent to the University resent the students for being loud and exuberant. The school itself is geographically large; if you choose to attend then take a physical walk-around on campus before your initial registration for classes. There are many buildings on campus from which you cannot get to another building in the passing period (e.g., from Gittings Hall to the Social Sciences building) if you are walking. Bikes are a good idea, but the campus is very crowded during the day, and biking can be a challenge.
There is a very wide array of activities to be involved in, ranging from foreign-language films and lectures to more traditional activities like Greek organizations and religious activities, volunteer activities, and so forth.
I strongly recommend that anyone interested in the University of Arizona keep it high on their list. The academics are top-notch in most fields, most particularly in Philosophy, Optical Sciences, Journalism, Anthropology, and most Sciences generally. For the Graduate the same programs are highly regarded, and the Colleges of Law, Medicine, Architecture, and Nursing are in the top in their field. The College of Business has one of the top ten programs in the US in Entrepreneurship, and the Eller school of Management is consistently in the top schools in the US for MBAs.
I had a great experience at the U of A, and think most other people will as well! |
