I attended Akron for my undergraduate degree. The school has some excellent programs. The college may be known primarily for its engineering and business, but you shouldn't disregard the quality instructors found the College of Arts and Sciences, either. Akron also offers classes some more unique areas, such as Japanese and Chinese language and archaeology.
I was definitely satisfied with my academic experience at the University of Akron. I spent a few years in the Honors College. I ended up dropping out of the Honors program so I could graduate sooner, but the program was definitely worthwhile. There were seminar-style classes, special advisors, and the opportunity to craft an Honor's Thesis within your area of interest. (Perfect if you're anticipating attending graduate school down the road!)
Most of my professors were top-notch. Class sizes tended to be small for such a large school (around 30 for my sociology classes, probably a max of 60 in my business classes). In fact, the purposely build the College of Business Administration with small classrooms to guarantee that class sizes would never get too out-of-hand. I can definitely say I learned a lot, and was left reasonably well prepared for graduate school.
On-campus housing was pricy, but nice. I spent several years living in Honors housing, which had spacious rooms and a convenient location in the center of campus. Most of the dorms are air-conditioned, which is a big plus!
There were some downsides to Akron. If you're looking for a great social atmosphere, you might want to look elsewhere. Most of the students are commuters. Those who live on campus tend to go home on the weekends, which makes meeting new friends difficult. Also, the lack of students on campus on the weekends means that most of the dining options are also closed. Of course, it's still possible to make friends in the dorms, in classes, etc. A lot of people I knew joined sororities in order to expand their social circle.
The location of campus isn't especially desirable, either. Crime in the surrounding neighborhoods is a little higher than I was comfortable with, and when I did move off-campus, I moved to an apartment about 20 minutes down the highway, where I felt much safer. That being said, I never felt threatened while walking on campus during the day, and campus escorts are available if you want to get to your car at night.
Overall, if you'll be commuting, Akron is definitely a great place to go. I'd highly recommend it. If you're looking for a campus living experience more than an academic experience, you might want to consider other options. |

My advice to students considering University of Akron is, please consider it carefully. Examine why you really want to go to school, and find out how much other, more prestigious schools cost before you decide to attend. The University has spent a great deal on making over its physical image and raising tuition rates to afford the facelift, but the interior and the people haven't changed.
To "successfully" attend this school, you must be prepared to research and research again any information told to you by anyone there (professors, financial aid, counselors). The communication between school officials is minimal and you are likely to get some bad advice on how to handle a situation or problem. No one will take responsibility for misinformation, so it is up to you to make sure that anything that can go wrong won't because you didn't check or go over someone's head to find proper information. Not being diligent will cost you thousands of dollars here and the chance to finish your degree, get student loans, etc.
There are some wonderful professors, but the majority of classes are still taught by TA's who are highly stressed, and may not be the most helpful or interested in their jobs. The Academic advisors are aloof for the most part as they take on a huge number of students. You will get lost in the shuffle even if you are there on a regular basis. The Financial Aid department interior employees are something you'd have to experience for yourself. I cannot write about this department without too much of a jaded opinion. Putting it this way, there are competent workers back there, but there are equally, extremely incompetent workers, who have no problem getting downright rude trying to cover up mistakes they made with your paper work. The incompetency will cost you, not the school.
Other than that, if you just want a place to kick around for a few years until you decide that you are very serious about your education, it is a mediocre value for the money. The campus is beautiful (now), however be careful outside of campus. There have been a lot of recent assaults against women, and several break-ins, along with the suicide of a student who was dealt with by the lesser competent staff in such a way that it permanently ruined his life, a chance at ever getting into his career, and believe it or not people, the University has barely begun to accept the responsibility it says it has in regards to it. Choose wisely! |
