Not a very "serious" school--it always felt like the kind of place mid-range or lower students went when they had no better options and no clear ideas of what to do with their lives. Lubbock is around 250,000 in population but a very quiet, conservative town, so if you're looking for that in a college city, it might be worth it (there's a church every other block, it seems). Theater department is awful, my other experiences in foreign language, English, and sociology departments were mediocre. The classes were often undermined not by bad faculty--although that happened a couple of times--but mostly by bad or apathetic students who weren't interested in learning, but more concerned with planning the next beerfest.
Arts community in the city is small and spread out -- if you're an artist, don't expect a lot of interest from the community or the city.
Oh, also Lubbock is mostly white or latino -- very little other cultures are represented in any measurable way in the city itself, although of course the campus is much more diverse. |
