Texas A&M University is a unique place, full of spirit and tradition. That aspect appeals to some, but for me it was the academics that made my undergraduate time there stellar. Texas A&M is a Research One University, but it defies stereotypes by placing a very large emphasis on undergraduate teaching. I had the feeling that professors and administrators there were much more interested in building up successful students than in tearing them down. For the truly academically motivated, it has an alluring honors program, but the quality teaching extends to all levels. On top of that, due to its large research infrastructure, there are many opportunities for undergraduate research, a must for those planning on going into academic fields in the future. The heavily conservative student body can be offsetting to some, but A&M is a very large university, and almost anyone can find his or her niche there. I'd highly recommend looking into it. |

I transferred to TAMU from TCU, so the size was a bit of a shock. I also felt very isolated my first summer at TAMU. I ended up liking almost all my classes, and I think the quality of education was excellent. I do think that anyone who is not very, very politically conservative might need to be prepared to be considered a hippie and/or socialist. Most of the debates will be good-natured, in class and out, but it helps to know that you're going to be quite the outsider if you are particularly liberal at all. (For the record, I'm libertarian, but that is little understood, so I had to defend my politics a lot. My major was political science, though. I don't know that the engineers had as much of a problem with this.)
Also, if you don't go in for the super-traditional aspects, you might not fit in with the majority. Since I transferred, I wasn't indoctrinated as a freshman, and found a lot of the traditions overdone and a bit silly. Some are really impressive, though, especially Taps.
So, if you're conservative and like a lot of tradition, this is the place for you. Even if this isn't true, and you like being part of a spirited minority, it could still be a good place to be. The education I received there was useful, certainly. The respect I get from most employers for having graduated from there make it seem like it was worth it to have suffered through the isolation, too. |

If A&M isn't in your Top 3, you probably should go somewhere else. Most people at the school are head over heels in love with the university and it will be readily apparent if you're not. A&M gets a bad rap on the diversity issue, but in general the university is more accepting or inclusive of everyone than most schools in the state. A&M was my only choice, and therefore I would still choose to go here. Many positive things about A&M include a very low crime rate, very unified student body, great facilities, a very wired campus, and outstanding athletics. Some negative things about A&M are stereotyping from others in the state, staunch conservativism, and somewhat of a problem with respect for differences in sexual orientation. |
