This is a very teacher-oriented college in the northwest catskills of NY. It is almost exactly halfway between Binghamton and Albany on rt 88. The best parts of the campus for me was the student life and the edux courses. Eduction while no longer offered through the college was key to understanding and learning about myself, which is really what college is all about. I found that the various departments were a mixed bag of good and bad, and generally the teachers who were less skilled were teaching introductory courses and the more skilled given more advanced students to work with. This was REVERSED within the earth science department. If going to an open house or visiting, ask about the hobbit mural and tunnel systems. Both are no longer available to students, but have interesting history.
Lee hall, which was once a dining hall, and then a computer center, is now the county emergency services building.
Hulbert hall, aka "fippie" was nicknamed after one of the early residence hall advisors and had the best cafeteria although I think it is closed now. The building facade was falling down the hill as well.
Other buildings that are sinking are the Student union, it is falling into the NY-shaped pond. (use your imagination) Oneonta is marked by the fountain in the pond.
The city of Oneonta is a fascinating blend of urban wannabes, bars and other industries based on college life. It has a very active social scene and various organizations that can keep a student occupied and either in or out of trouble, depending on intent. |

SUNY Oneonta is a good liberal arts college. For anyone considering education, theater, the arts, and most definitely music, I would recommend taking a good look at the school. The classes are good, the teachers are okay (depends on the teacher, of course), the scenery is very beautiful. The campus is sitting in the middle of the mountains next to a small city with a very rich cultural side.
Always worth taking a look at, and for certain programs, well, worth going here for your education. |
