I absolutely loved SUNY New Paltz and I wish I knew that I would love it before when I went there. When deciding about colleges, I really was not sure. I had no idea how great New Paltz was when I decided to go there. I'm so happy wth my decision and would definitely go there again if I had to do it all over again. I was an English major. I graduated in 3 years, yes, 3 years (2008). I never really had an issue with getting classes, like other people have at other CUNY and SUNY schools.
What I truly loved about New Paltz was that it was so unique. You will not have this experience anywhere else. The classes themselves are very unique. There is such an interesting selection of classes in every major. You will really open your mind and learn so much because other schools probably do not have such an interesting array of classes. The classes are normal, regular sized. So you'll get a good well-rounded education. So that's that for education/classes.
Now the atmosphere is what makes New Paltz so great. When I first visited (I'm from Bklyn) I thought I would be so bored because the town is very small. Even though the town may be small in size, your in a college town. You'll have fun on-campus and off-campus. The students are a very unique bunch so there is many different kinds of personalities and you'll learn so much about people in general. There is always something going on... The clubs and Student Activities are very active and put on lots of unique programs. Especially when the weather gets nice. It's so great. A lot of the fraternities have bbqs outside and there are lots of programs (like carnvials and stuff) taking place outside. And sometime in the spring, there is rainbow week. I forget exactly, but there is jam asia one week, latino week another etc. And there is a program every day relating to that.
So you'll have a lot of fun and grow as a person because you'll learn a lot about other people and start thinking in a whole new way :)
If you do go here, I really suggest getting involved in clubs and activities. There is Greek Life here (I was in a sorority)...it's not super strong, but it's fun if you decide to join one. But if not, you'll still have plenty of fun and plenty of friends :) It's not like one of those schools where you have to join a Greek org to have friends...NOT AT ALL lol.
So I'm highly highly suggest New Paltz. |

I transfered to SUNY New Paltz after going to another SUNY school for one semester. That school was too large and impersonal. I found SUNY New Paltz to be a breath of fresh air. The campus is not very large, but it isn't too small either. It's a very comfortable fit. If you are looking for a huge university, I wouldn't suggest going there. But if you're looking for a smaller school, it is a great place to be. The professors there are excellent. Most of my proffesors knew me by name, which is not as common in many colleges due to class size. I still keep in touch with a few of my professors, as many of them love to keep in touch with alumni. New Paltz is a great school for Art students and Education students, there programs for both majors are excellent. It also has a large population of study abroad students, this adds to the already evident diversity on campus. The Town of New Paltz is a great town, and full of culture and there's plenty of things to do.
The only bad thing I can think of about the school is that the administration is a bit flakey, but if you keep track of your loans, accounts and class progress report yourself, you can make sure that they are doing everything correctly. But I think most schools have this problem. And they do fix any mistakes they might have made.If I had to do it over again, I definitely would have gone to New Paltz. I only wish that I had ended up going to that school first.
Not too many people know that the campus is situated right below a catskill mountain range. It is beautiful all year long, and there are a couple of state parks in the mountains. Great for hiking, mountain biking, and swimming...swimming in mountain lakes is great, the water is clean and the air is so fresh. There are also berry, and apple orchards all around the area...picking your own fruit is great! and its only about a 2 hour drive from Manhattan! |
