SUNY Cortland trains the most teachers in NY State. It is also a large physical education school, and athletic teams have won many championships.
I loved the college because there is a strong tradition of interaction among faculty and students. I have stayed in touch with many faculty friends after graduation. They are valued mentors. Classes are smaller than at larger institutions and liberal arts offerings have expanded and become stronger over the years. The university has approximately 7200 students (undergrad and graduate). This campus offers students a chance to shine. There are many student activities that offer leadership opportunities. There is a new program emphasizing the connection between town and gown.
More alumni from SUNY Cortland remain in the area after graduation than most of the other SUNY schools. This is certainly an indicator that the student experience is positive.
I would certainly come to Cortland again. For students from NY City, it is an opportunity to experience small town life and culture. It is just far enough away from home to experience independence, but near enough to go home for a weekend if you feel the need to do so.
I would advise students who want to be part of a close community to come to Cortland. There are many state of the art academic buildings (recently renovated because they were constructed in the 1960s). Cortland students will also enjoy proximity to other great learning institutions (Cornell, Syracuse, SUNY Binghamton). This area of central NY boasts the largest number of college students in the country (not Boston, as most people think).
You will also be in a gorgeous part of NY, close to skiing areas, campgrounds, lakes, and will be able to get close to nature.
