I would absolutely recommend this school. I would choose it again. The weather is usually unpleasant, but the people are friendly and welcoming and the sicial scene is excellent.
My opinion of SUNY Albany has really fluctuated over the years. While not a premier top tier school, I was certainly prepared for my career (accounting), was able to get a decent job and earn a healthy salary. However, the school does lack a certain prestige that other universities have, and in some ways I regret not attending a different university without the typical "party school" stigma.
Beyond that there are certainly a lot of great things about the school. The tuition is reasonable, there is a wealth of different majors and classes to choose from, and there are certainly opportunities to party and date if you are into that. The social scene is there. And if you are committed to learning and doing well, the opportunity is certainly there, but you may have to overcome your fellow students in order to do well. And partying is certainly addictive.
It is an extremely LARGE school. It does not offer much personalized attention. The first 2 years the classes are very large lecture hall type classes. If you are looking for smaller class sizes, and professors that get to knoww you personally, this is not the school for you.
I graduated in 1982, and the population has only gotten larger. I can't speak to the living conditions, as I lived at home since my house was only a mile from campus. My issues with SUNY Albany:
-too many people in a class
-teachers had no idea who you were
-many students were very "cliquie" (sp)
I have some friends who went there for both undergrad and grad school. Many lived on campus. They didn't like SUNY Albany either. If you want more of a high school feel, choose another school.
I chose this college because of its convenient location. I wish there had been another option. Most of the classes are not intellectually stimulating, and many of the professors I've had spend more time spouting political propaganda than teaching. I have been graded down on assignments and verbally attacked for not agreeing with the official party line as presented in class- which usually didn't have anything to do with the class anyway. My advice: go somewhere else.
I chose this college for its convenient location. I wish there had been another option. Many of the classes I have taken have been as intellectually stimulating as cleaning the cat litter box. I have had multiple bad experiences with professors who used their position to spread their own social/political propaganda rather than teach, and who attacked any student with a differing opinion. I hear the parties are good and that this is a great party school, but, honestly, I'm interested in an education, not a hangover. My advice: go somewhere else.
It was extremely fun....the cafeteria food was horrible though..but other than that, party life is awesome...everyone is very helpful and understanding
Enrollment in forensics programs has soared since the TV show "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" first began airing, with many colleges experiencing a 100-400% growth in applicants
