This is a great school academically, but lacks in other places. The social scene here is harsh, Greek life rules, and the football team, well let's just say they try hard. SMU is expensive, but the education is worth it!
Some of the advising is poor, especially for transfer students. At the time, transfers were unofficially second class students, which I was. Many upper level classes were not accepted nor were some very basic 101-level courses. One advisor was unaware of requirements, which meant taking an advanced math class senior year outside of the major and wholly unprepared. Of course, this resulted in a failing grade and delayed my early graduation. A second advisor said "Why didn't you take X?" Because I was told I had to take another class? The expense and the hassle. Not worth it.
There are a lot of pressures on students to join or participate in activities within the Greek system or else risk being a social pariah. This is not what an education is about, unless you're trying to learn about the world of sharks from wanna-be MBAs.
Academics are definitely strong, and the degree means something. SMU is well-respected all across the nation. If I could go back to high school, I would especially choose SMU now that I know how student life is at the University. I have known more than one person to come here and just not get along with anybody. Just like every other university, you are comfotable when you find your niche. I would recommend this university to those independent enough and spirited enough to balance academics and social life.
