There is a pretty low-key atmosphere; the people, students, teachers and staff are all very friendly and helpful.
The town itself is small and there isn't too much action, except at private parties, but you are only about an hour north from San Francisco, and all the excitement of the big city without having to live there. The weather and the area of Sonoma County is beautiful, with the ocean, vineyards, redwood forests, and mountains all a short drive away.
The campus is small and easy to navigate. Class sizes (for upper-division classes, the only ones I've been in) are manageable, and you really get to know the majority of students in your major. The History department, for example, is pretty popular because of all the students going to be teachers, but it is not difficult to get to know a lot of people.
Classes themselves and their difficulty vary widely by professor, but SSU students are very vocal about their opinions and there are usually a lot of entries on sites that allow you to vote for your professor and leave comments. The comments are usually articulate and I have found them to be reasonably accurate.
If I had it to do over, I would go again, and I would have gone right away instead of going to a junior college first. Although it may only be a state school, it is much better - more challenging in the right ways - than community colleges.
One caveat - I have noticed that most of the financial aid, including scholarships, goes to people with financial need, so if your family can cover the expense of college (whether or not your parents are actually paying) don't expect to get scholarships unless your grades are tip-top. |
