I had a very good experience with Salem. The bond with my salem sisters was wonderful, and I feel that I received a wonderful education.
Though there were some scheaduling issues due to limited faculty, it was generally easy to find courses every semester. The Jan term courses were always interesting and the internship program was extensive.
I liked that we were able to take certain courses at Wake Forest because it gave me the opportunity to study at a different school and also the chance to see someone of the opposite gender!
It was very easy to find somewhere to fit in, and celebrations such as "Fall Fest" helped to build relationships. The campus itself is beautiful, and the dorms are a notch above typical campus living.
My only fault with the school is its limited resources for non-traditional students. Though there is an extensive continuing ed program, it falls a bit short in the "non-traditional, non-residential" student catagory.
To potential Salem Students: If you choose Salem, don't give up after only a few weeks or months on campus. Sure, things can seem daunting. Just give yourself time to adjust to having a roommate, sticking to a new schedule, being away from home, and *gasp* not having guys on campus! By your Junior year, you'll be glad you stayed.
I would definitely still choose to go to Salem, simply for the fact that there are so many opportunities off campus. If Salem doesn't offer a class, the faculty will work with area universities to get you into one of their classes. There is plenty of off-campus networking to do with three other universities in town.
The best benefits of Salem come after graduation when a student can say, "I'm a Salem alum." You'd be surprised how many people will answer with "Hey, me too" or "my mom/aunt/grandma/sister went to Salem too". Graduation from Salem College gives young women a whole new world of connections to explore.
The number of students who study the Russian language in U.S. colleges has dropped in half since the end of the Cold War. Chinese, on the other hand, has doubled.
