RPI was torture and I am still haunted by the classes, professors, and administration. I graduated cum laude in 2007 with my BS in chemical engineering. I made some great friends, but I haven't seen them since (everyone was very introverted). The classes were very difficult and I was surprised I even passed. After being conned by my advisor, I stayed on and earned my PhD in chemical engineering. That was the worst decision of my life.
I was treated as an outcast during graduate school, despite my achievements and journal publications. After graduating, I struggled to find employment, with no help from RPI. Today, I teach part-time at a community college, still trying to find my "first" job, more than 6 years after graduation. |

Pros: compared to a city school like CMU or MIT where you might also go for engineering, RPI is in a small town/city, where there is relatively ample parking and plenty of housing. Also, there are plenty of fast roads to get to the shopping areas. The IT infrastructure is very complete and the internet is never down. Almost all buildings have wireless for the mandatory laptop program, which I think is a major benefit.
Cons: don't expect to meet a girl there, especially in engineering, as the male:female ratio is something like 3:1. If you're not used to snow, you better get used to it because it is very cold and snows a lot in Troy (however, the snow removal guys know what they're doing and you'll always be able to get where you're going). If you're not a super geek, you might feel alienated by all the nerds around, but there are other like you (I'm told).
Overall, RPI is a great school and you'll receive a much better education there than at a state school (I can tell based on conversations with people who graduate from other schools). |
