Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, IN is a public university founded in 1869. West Lafayette conveniently located about 65 miles or about 50 minutes drive from Indianapolis. Purdue has a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs which consistently rank among the best in the country. Currently Purdue hosts almost 40,000 students in its main campus and approximately 3,000 more in its statewide campuses. Purdue students range from all 50 states of the United States and also from more than 130 countries which bring rich diversity to the campus.
Purdue is famous with its school of engineering which rank #15 in the US and also its school of aviation which rank #6 in the US. The Armstrong building is one of Purdue's newest additions to the campus. Twenty-two of America's astronauts also hold Purdue degrees.
I am currently a senior in Purdue University. I really love the campus environment; however it could get really, really cold in the winter time. The city of West Lafayette provides free public transportation for Purdue students. The buses run every 30 minutes and the campus buses run every 5 minutes. A five or ten minute delays are always common. If you do own a car, parking around the University area between 7am and 7pm could be a headache. Purdue offers its students the option to buy yearly parking passes for about $200.
If I had to do it all over again, I would gladly choose Purdue again. I am currently an ambassador for the school of technology and as part of my job as an ambassador is of course to promote Purdue. If should have any advice for new students is "Do not skip your classes!!!!"
Overall, I love Purdue. I think Purdue offers quality education and its name is known worldwide. It was never hard for me to find employment, thanks to the old Purdue.

-if you are coming from a big city, think twice.. west lafayette is a small midwest town with limited number of social activities.. however, chicago is only a 2-hour drive from the campus..
-you have to live in a dorm in your freshmen year but you can move out to an apartment after your first year.. housing options (on and off campus) are plenty but getting a parking permit for on-campus garages is a huge problem for undergrad students.. if you plan to live off campus on your second year, first fight for your garage permit..
-great engineering programs all around.. industrial engineering program is one of the best in the nation.. technological infrastucture is very up-to-date and ahead of many tech schools.. labs are better than any school i visited in the region (iu, osu, depaul, northwestern, uic etc)..
-get a bike for your first year but bus loops on and off campus will get you anywhere.. dont bring your car in your freshmen year.. never..
-downtown lafayette is very tasteless.. nobody goes there anyways..
-do your homework :)
-language courses are really educating and good spots for making new friends.. try the abroad summer programs of the language courses (i took italian and went to florence for 6 weeks.. best summer ever..)
-study hard, sleep hard, party hard..

Purdue is a great school - especially if you are going into Engineering, Management, or basically anything but Liberal Arts. While going to Purdue promises you a good education, they don't provide the best funding or attention to quite a few of their soft/non science majors. Purdue is a great choice for those who want to be involved in the Greek system - it has one of the largest systems in the country. Purdue also has a beautiful campus, which is very important to students who realize they're going to have to look at it almost every day for four years. Purdue isn't extraordinarily diverse, but it does have a large international population. The West Lafayette area is certainly a college town, and many can find it boring. Keep your eye open for different events that occur downtown or are put on by the city. In general, I wouldn't trade my Purdue experience for anything. It seems like a huge campus at first, but the longer you are here the smaller it gets. Enjoy yourself, dive in, and don't spend ALL your time getting drunk or studying. |

Purdue University is for people who are willing to work hard. YOu get a lot of homework assignments and projects. Most of the classes require attendence, which also counts towards your overall grades. It's very important not to slack off during the first 2 years, which a lot of people do and that's the main reason they drop out or fail their classes. It's also very important to get involved with school activities early. A lot of people wait until the last minute before they graduate to join some organizations. It doesn't work. As far as the location is concerned, the campus is pretty much the reason West Lafayett exists. So, there is not much to do besides the activities on campus. I mean, it is in the middle of a lot of corn fields. In recent 2-3 years, they have upgraded and opened new dining halls and let me tell you, it is very impressive. You can find a lot of good food there and most of the halls are now all you can eat. They are also putting a lot of money into new buildings, so the school is only getting better. One bad thing though, is that Purdue has a large population of international students, which means a lot of their TAs and professors are foreigners, some of whom do not speak English very well and that can be very frustrating sometimes. On the other hand, it's good to have a variety of students on campus. You get to learn about other cultures. I would recommed Purdue for its academics, reputation and facilities, but not for the location. |

I was in engineering, so my advice goes to the engineers. Only choose this area if you are willing to put in the work, because it is very time-consuming and you might not like all of the subject areas. The campus is decent, pretty dull on rainy days, but very attractive in the summer. Not a very big party school, but there are enough to go around. There is a big international community, so foreign students, if you look in the right places, you will find a home away from home. I would choose this college over again, because since I am in-state, the money I pay for the education I get is excellent. |
