Portland State University is a rapidly improving, tier 4, urban research institution (offering a wide range of graduate degrees) located on the south side of downtown Portland, Oregon's "Park Blocks." PSU is the largest University in Oregon.
Historically considered something of a "commuter" school, it has recently constructed a new dormitory and is attracting larger numbers of new high school graduates, resulting in a fairly rapid decrease in the average age of attending students.
I am presently a senior at Portland State in the Applied Linguistics department and would recommend PSU to returning or first time college students who might otherwise have a difficult time being admitted to a higher tier university. Also, Portland State will appeal to those who prefer the energy of an urban and extremely international university environment.
Portland State is particularly recommended for those interested in studying the Japanese language (the Japanese language program is nationally well-regarded and there are a large number of Japanese international students on campus), and for those interested in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) -- as PSU offers both an undergraduate certificate and an MA in TESOL.
PSU's growing relationship with the prestigious Oregon Health and Science University offers some interesting opportunities for PSU students, including a joint 5-year Biomedical Informatics program, through which one obtains a BS in Computer Science from Portland State, and a Masters in Biomedical Informatics from OHSU.
PSU is a very liberal institution, which may be an annoyance to those with a moderate or conservative political orientation.
For those who are not familiar with Portland, OR, think along the lines of Vancouver, B.C.. It's also been described as sort of "San Francisco Junior."
Portland State is definitely worth considering. Things are looking up in the Park Blocks.
