Oberlin is a very interesting school, in that many of its advantages are balanced out by disadvantages that amount to the same thing. For example, the relative lack of oversight from college staff make Oberlin a wonderful place to find yourself and experience a great deal of personal growth, but with that kind of freedom you can just as easily lose yourself to drugs and apathy.
The co-op system pioneered by Oberlin students in the 1950s is still in effect today, meaning that students can choose to live and dine in housing run completely by themselves and their fellow co-opers. This is amazing, and everyone should do it.
As for the academics, they're what you make of them. It is possible to receive an incredible education, but you can also graduate without having really pushed yourself intellectually.
The biggest problem from my point of view, as a former student, is that the college's current administration is more concerned with raising the average SAT score of incoming students than with ensuring that Oberlin's unique cultural heritage is preserved. You'll see fewer crazy people, hippies and artists and more plastic cheerleader types gabbing on their cell phones now than would have been the case 6 years ago. |
