I have some great memories of my three years at Northern, and some not so great memories. First, I would suggest that you appreciate what a bargain Northern is compared to almost all other colleges in the state. I would suggest if economy is very important to you, complete your first two years at the community college that is in-district for you (assuming you live in Illinois.) But, you are going to want to live in DeKalb, as unappealing as that may seem to you. Believe me, you are not going to want to drive an hour to class after the first couple of weeks, much less during the winter. And understand that jobs in DeKalb are competitive and sometimes hard to find, so save up whatever you can when school isn't in session.
If you aren't familiar with college (and many NIU students aren't), do whatever you can to make your face and name familiar to any advisors you can round up. While most people find they can't graduate in four years for a variety of reasons, try hard to make sure you don't miss graduation because you didn't understand your credit distribution requirements. Also, a student well-known in their department can often squeeze into required classes that are supposedly "full". Don't over sleep on class sign-up day!
Don't change your major more than once.
See more of your professors and classes than you do of Greek Row.
Do something extra curricular if you can find the time. Stay away from WalMart at 3am. It's not pretty. Finally, realize that Northern is a school where you can be a big fish in a big pond. |
