New Jersey Institute of Technology (previously named the
Newark College of Engineering) is a public research
university in Newark, New Jersey. NJIT offers 100 degree programs in
27 undergraduate majors and 30 graduate specialties.The school opened as the Newark Technical School in 1884 with 88 students. As of
2003, there are 8,800 students, 1,400 who live in one of the school's four dormitories.The current president, Dr. Robert Altenkirch, was inaugurated on May 2, 2003.New Jersey Institute of Technology is now home to the Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School of Architecture, School
of Management, Albert Dorman Honors College, College of Science and Liberal Arts, and College of Computing Sciences.The school offers the only NAAB-accredited bachelor's degree in architecture in the state of New Jersey.It offers combined programs in medicine with the New Jersey School of Medicine at the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and St.
George's University in Granada.The university is known foremost for its research capabilities ranging from the fields of stem cell research to nanotechnology to
solar physics and polymer science. The school also
specializes in the research of smart gun technology. NJIT's mascot is the Highlander.
