Michigan Tech is a great school if you want a rock solid Technical education and you live in the state of Michigan. Their programs are one of the best values available if you are paying in state tuition. The faculty is knowledgeable and passionate about their field of study. If you can get accustomed to the snow (average of 10 feet per year,) the cold, sometimes as low at 40 degrees below zero fahrenheit, and the seclusion (very small town, population halves when students leave for summer.) You could be very happy here.
I would highly recommend this college, however there needs to be a disclaimer: Houghton is the middle of nowhere, and you have to be able to deal with that. Your social life will probably be entirely based around the college and/or activities with your fellow students, there aren't many places to shop for anything you need, and there is only one 24-hour resteraunt (although there are many non-24-hour joints). As long as you can deal with this, and don't mind ordering many items you want/need online, the teaching staff is great and after the latest shakeup the administration is at least tolerable.
When P.T. Barnum donated money to Tufts University, he did so on the condition that the school's mascot be named after his beloved elephant. The Tufts University mascot has been the "Jumbos" ever since.
