I would absolutely recommend this college. If it were possible, I would have attended an Ivy-league school where I was accepted, but I could not raise the additional $16,000 a year over and above scholarships that would have been required to attend that school. MSCD was a very affordable option in state and turned out to be extremely well-suited in a number of ways. It was a happy surprise.
MSCD is a commuter campus in downtown Denver, making arrangements to mix work and school schedules much easier than they might otherwise have been. As many students do work full or near full time jobs, there are extensive course offerings at night and on weekends.
Administration is pleasant and positive and as a state college work hard to earn their keep. A number of scholarship opportunities are available.
Faculty is surprisingly high quality for a modest tuition - many faculty are nationally published and award winning instructors.
The library is extremely well-stocked, and there is a pleasant art gallery, a nicely developed large student union building, extensive parking and on-campus food available. Numerous shows of various kinds from an evening with Henry Rollins to a madrigal choir are hosted in St. Cajetan's church.
Until recently there were no dormitory buildings available - recently an enterprise has opened several high-rise apartment dormitories in the back of the campus. These are surrounded by train rails and not very attractive, but are extremely accessible.
Due to the commuter campus design, the age range of students is much wider than at most traditional colleges, with an average age of 27 and students ranging from thirteen years old to seventy-eight when I was at school there. This leads to a wealth of experience which is shared in courses from management to literature. Poets in my poetry courses were well-read and well-performed, while the people I worked on management projects with were responsible, dependable and able to work in a productive team.
The Greek system is represented modestly on campus, with little concern for the gender of the applicant and largely paperwork and academic qualifications, although the pilots training in the flight program do tend to be more active and aggressive in acting out Fraternal rituals. There is little drunken debauchery as there is not much room on campus for it and most students are also working full or nearly full time.
Generally speaking people are attractive, intelligent, and kind. |
