My advice for students considering MCA is to compare its tuition costs, course listings, and area living expenses with those of other nearby art colleges, like Savannah College of Art and Design and the Art Institute of Atlanta. I found that MCA is less expensive, but that limitations in course offerings reflect this. However, this was not enough to dissuade me from attending.
Besides, MCA offers plenty of scholarships to persuade the ambivalent student. Ultimately, I have found that one's quality of learning is as much a result of personal motivation and effort as it is one of instructional quality.
That said, I recommend MCA to any and all exceptionally creative souls who want to expose themselves to others like them, new ideas, and fresh insights into the nature and future of fine art and graphic design. If I could relive my past, I would probably still choose to attend MCA, although I would also probably take my studies more seriously and take different classes, like printmaking and photography.
I should not close before mentioning one downside I found while attending MCA, which is that its academic side was relatively weak. For example, no math courses were required outside "History of Math," which was very interesting in that it was taught by an local engineer and covered such topics as the Fibonacci sequence and fractals, but not exactly rigorous. Most people do not welcome math courses, especially at art colleges, but the fact is that today, there is more and more of a reason to become mathematically literate when planning and creating art. MCA needs to boost its academic offerings so that its students do not leave with a plethora of ideas and no idea how to implement them in a four-dimensional, real-world environment. |
