If you are deciding between attending MIT or not, ask yourself whether you would like to have many research or internship experiences as an undergrad. If so, MIT is a good choice since the school has one of the most supportive undergraduate research opportunity programs in the country as well as strong industry internship programs. Otherwise, there are probably less expensive schools out there that will prepare you just as well for life after college.
The undergraduate education at MIT is definitely an experience. As a student, be prepared to pick between having a social life, getting enough sleep, and keeping the demanding academic course load (typically between 48 to 54 hours a week) under control. Most students, excepting a few incredible ones, end up choosing two out of the three above.
That said, MIT is an excellent school that will prepare you very well in whatever you decide to do after you graduate. The hallmark of the MIT education is that it teaches you to think, rather than train you in specific vocational skills. The undergraduate curriculum is excellent and not limited to the stereotypical "engineering" fields. MIT actually has one of the best biology and humanities programs in the country. The non-academic offerings at MIT are also very diverse. In athletics, crew and fencing are especially strong.
The part of the city of Cambridge where MIT is situated is pretty dull, unfortunately. On the bright side, it is fairly close to Boston and public transportation is very convenient. Because of the numerous colleges and universities in the area, Boston is very much a college and young professionals town, and the nightlife and offerings are geared towards such an audience, accordingly. |

As a person who appreciates and identifies closely with literature, philosophy, and the arts, I felt the humanities education at MIT to be somewhat lacking and relegated to sidelines, to the status of "hobby". Of course, that is a symptom of what makes MIT, well, MIT.
Another thing that struck a nerve was that, problem sets that virtually every class gives as homework, ultimately seemed to be intended as "scripts" for question and answer. Basically what I mean is, you got your problem set, you went to office hours, you asked your TA how to solve each problem, the TA walked you through it and told you the answer, you write up a solution following what the TA said, you get a good grade on the problem set. If you can extrapolate these solutions to other analogous situations, you can do the tests and get a good grade.
If you by some inspiration happen to want to think independently about the problems and waste your time deriving solutions on your own...Well, you'll miss office hours, you won't hear the answer from the TA, your problem set writeup will be wrong, you will get bad grades, and you will fail your tests.
There, now that you know the secret to success at MIT, go forth and do well. |
