Choose your college based on location and your major!! Not on where your friends are going, not on what your family thinks and (within reason) not on money, because if you work hard you can get a lot of money in grants and scholarships, and any loans you have to take out you can pay back after graduation.
I absolutely love Marshall University and recommend highly! Especially to Journalism students. My only complaint is the Marshall Plan, and only because it has a tendency to keep students in school for longer than they need to be by requiring some unnecessary courses, but you'll have that with a lot of good schools. My other complaint is the current state of the football program... but that's another issue entirely.
New students should check out the new development being done on campus--dorms, rec center, alumni center--they're really looking good.
I studied English/Creative Writing at Marshall and got my BA in English. The English department is wonderful and has many fine Doctors/Professors. The campus is gorgeous with old buildings and huge trees. Please know that it is a rather small school but not super small. I would definitely go there again. The only reason I didn't do my graduate studies there was because they did not offer the degree I wanted. The biggest issue I had while attending was registering for class and dealing with credit transfers from other schools. Register early and fight for your credits!
Incoming freshman should consider living in the dorms and should take an English and History class since they are expected of every major if you are undecided. I would recommend this college to someone who is from a small town because it is a good school that is not very large and has friendly staff. If I had to do it again, I would not have chosen this college because I am a pre-dental student and they do not offer many biology classes that are needed. The pros of the college is that it is small and you get to know your peers well and the cons would be that there is not much surrounding the college to do so most people go home on the weekends. People should know that this is mostly a commuter college so if you want to do something on the weekends, there is not much to do and not a lot of people to do things with.
I really enjoyed this college. There are lots of opportunities for distractions (partying) but there is also a lot of academic support for students. A well-balanced approach is best. Moderation is the key!
A small college with an at-home atmosphere.
Pros: Small campus -- easy to find classes, everything is compacted into one area. Friendly people
Cons: Not alot to do off campus. Nightlife nearly nonexistant.
I loved going to Marshall University. The football games are awesome. The 4professors really care and I receievd a top rate education. If you are thinking about MU I say it is a wonderful school that I am proud to be an alum of. My mother went to MU and so did I. I hope that my children follow in the family tradition.
