Louisiana Tech University, located in Ruston,
Louisiana, is a full fledged public university with an average 12,000 -
14,000 students each year. First instituted as Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in
1894, it is perhaps best known now for its engineering and art programs and its women's athletics, especially
basketball. Its men's sports teams are known as Bulldogs; women's teams are
called Lady Techsters. Famous alumni include Terry Bradshaw, Kix Brooks, Karl Malone and his daughter Cheryl Ford.It has received notoriety for its aviation program. Victor Saracini, captain of United Airlines Flight 175 that was hijacked and flew into the south tower of the World Trade Center in the September 11, 2001 attacks, was a student at Louisiana Tech in 1982.The current president of the university is Dr. Daniel Reneau, who also began the biomedical engineering program at Tech when
he was a professor in 1972.Louisiana Tech is a selective-admissions university and is attended by students from 50 states and 70 countries. It runs on
the quarter system, rather than the widely used semester system.Louisiana Tech's colors are Red and Reflex Blue, formerly Carolina Blue.It is a member of the University of
Louisiana System.
